Fans of the hilarious hidden camera show Jury Duty have reason to celebrate! Prime Video has announced a second season, titled Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, which will begin streaming on March 20th. The new season hopes to bring back the same funny and surprising moments that made the original so popular.
Honestly, Jury Duty completely charmed me – it struck this incredible balance between being genuinely heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny, and a huge part of that was thanks to Ronald Gladden, who had no idea what was going on! I’m a little worried Season 2, coming in March, will have a tough time recapturing that magic. Seriously, if you haven’t seen Jury Duty yet, you need to. You’ll be missing out on one of the funniest and most delightful comedies I’ve seen in ages.
Jury Duty Is a Hilarious and Surprisingly Heartfelt Comedy
The show Jury Duty starts with an ordinary person who thinks he’s participating in a documentary about the American legal system. What he doesn’t know is that everyone around him – all the other jurors – are actors. The show is essentially a social experiment, designed to place him in strange and funny scenarios and observe his reactions.
One of the funniest parts of Jury Duty is its memorable and unusual cast of characters. This includes actor James Marsden, who plays a slightly exaggerated version of himself and becomes friends with Gladden. We also meet Todd Gregory, a quirky inventor who loves to share his oddball ideas with Gladden. Although producers contribute to the show’s jokes and characters, all the conversations and interactions between the actors and Gladden are completely unscripted and made up on the spot.
The show started with one idea, but quickly evolved into something much richer as it was being made. Over its first eight episodes, an unexpected story emerged, all thanks to the performance of Ronald Gladden, who doesn’t even know the full purpose of the series.
Gladden proves to be a genuinely nice and approachable person, befriending and assisting his initially unlikeable fellow jurors. The show ultimately celebrates the ordinary person, concluding with a surprisingly positive and hopeful moment when the prank is revealed and Gladden receives a cash prize.
Okay, so I was totally blown away by Jury Duty last year – it really came out of nowhere! It ended up getting three Emmy nominations, which is huge, including one for best comedy series. Critics and audiences loved it, giving it an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and everyone was talking about how cleverly the show unfolded. What I really appreciated was how the producers made sure Ronald Gladden, the guy who didn’t know it was a prank, wasn’t just the butt of the joke – so many shows do that, and it’s awful. Because it was such a hit, a second season always seemed likely, even though it took a while to actually happen.
What to Expect From Jury Duty Season 2
Creating the show is naturally challenging, and even more so now that it’s become incredibly popular. With so many people knowing the original format, it’s hard to repeat the same methods without alerting the people being filmed. This is probably why Prime Video decided to change the format in Season 2, avoiding the jury setup which would have been too predictable for anyone involved.
Season 2 appears to be set at a company retreat. Like the first season, it will feature a regular person unexpectedly placed in a strange situation with comedic actors. This time, the focus is on Anthony, a temporary employee who recently started working at a family-run hot sauce company and has been invited to their corporate retreat, unaware that all his coworkers are actors.
Viewers who enjoyed the first season won’t see Ronald Gladden return for Company Retreat. His involvement would likely reveal the show’s true nature to the new participant and ruin the entire concept. Still, Company Retreat aims to recapture the magic and unexpected success of Jury Duty.
You can now watch Jury Duty on Prime Video. The new series, Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, will begin streaming on March 20th.
