Mother of Flies: A Modern Classic in Folk Horror Surges on Streaming

A popular horror film from 2025 is quickly gaining traction with viewers. It’s currently ranked as the third most-watched movie on AMC+, accessible through Amazon Channels, according to the tracking site Flix Patrol.

The Adams Family – Toby Poser, John Adams, and their daughter Zelda – created the new horror film, Mother of Flies. They all wrote, directed, and acted in it, and their older daughter, Lulu Adams, also appears in the movie.

In Mother of Flies, Mickey receives a life-threatening diagnosis and refuses to accept it. She ventures into the woods with her father to find Solveig, a secluded woman with a deep connection to death and the land, hoping to use dark magic for a cure. Over three days, Mickey undergoes Solveig’s intense and dangerous rituals. However, every healing comes with a price, and what seems like a curse to one might be a blessing to another. As long-held secrets are revealed, the boundary between life and death starts to blur, and Mickey is forced to confront unsettling truths known only to those who have passed on or are nearing the end of their lives.

The film Mother of Flies received very positive reviews, achieving a 96% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics described it as a darkly atmospheric and intensely personal folk horror film, praising its thoughtful exploration of death, stunning practical effects, and unique strangeness. Given this widespread praise, Mother of Flies deserves to be considered among the best in its genre.

Mother of Flies Is Part of Folk Horror Canon

Before Mother of Flies, the Adams family had already worked with Shudder on two other films: Hell Hole and Hellbender.
