With the conclusion of Stranger Things, Netflix is facing the challenge of finding another hit show to take its place. They actually had a potential replacement years ago with I Am Not Okay with This – a supernatural teen drama about a girl who develops telekinetic powers when she feels strong emotions. Interestingly, this series was even made by the same production company as Stranger Things.
Few TV shows resemble Stranger Things, but I Am Not Okay with This is a strong contender. With its retro look and the clear parallels between the characters Eleven and Syd Novak, it feels like a lost piece of the Stranger Things universe that somehow landed on Netflix. This single-season dark comedy originally aired just before the Covid-19 pandemic began.
Despite receiving generally positive feedback and Netflix’s original plans for another season, the show was unexpectedly cancelled. Now, nearly six years later, Netflix is still searching for a new hit to fill the void left by its success, but nothing seems to quite measure up.
I Am Not Okay With This Could Have Been Netflix’s Best Stranger Things Replacement
I was really hoping I Am Not Okay with This would be the next big thing after Stranger Things. It just felt right, and I thought it had a real chance. The first season didn’t blow the roof off with ratings, but it definitely grabbed my attention and seemed to attract the same kind of viewers who loved Stranger Things – people who were really invested in that vibe.
As a big fan of both shows, I’ve always felt the supernatural stuff in I Am Not Okay With This and Stranger Things felt like they could exist in the same world. It’s a shame, though, because Syd Novak, the main character in I Am Not Okay With This, seems to have totally slipped under the radar for most Stranger Things fans – I bet a lot of people never even knew about her!
Why I Am Not Okay With This Was Cancelled By Netflix (After Being Renewed)
The show only ran for one season, with a total of seven episodes. Surprisingly, it was initially picked up for a second season, but Netflix later decided to cancel it. The cancellation was announced in August 2020, and Netflix explained the decision by pointing to the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The unpredictable nature of the pandemic and its impact on the economy led to several shows with good viewership being canceled. Because I Am Not Okay with This was a new series that hadn’t built a large following yet, Netflix likely felt it was a low-risk decision to end it after one season.
Netflix also began to question whether another show aimed at the same audience as Stranger Things would actually be successful. By late 2020, they’d become more cautious and decided the potential benefits didn’t outweigh the risks, so they stopped developing the project.
Why I Am Not Okay With This Is Still Worth Watching
Looking back, the people who cancelled this show before it could really shine might regret their decision. I Am Not Okay with This actually seems even better now that we’ve had time to reflect on it.
For fans who thought the later seasons of Stranger Things weren’t as strong, revisiting the earlier seasons now will be a great experience. While I Am Not Okay With This isn’t quite as good, it still captures a similar creative and nostalgic feeling, focusing on the challenges of growing up.
