
New trailers for the highly anticipated survival horror game, Resident Evil Requiem, are revealing more gameplay and increasing fan excitement. While Leon, a popular character from past games, returns as a playable hero, Grace from RE: Outbreak also plays a central role in the story. Because these two characters tackle the horrors of the new Resident Evil game in very different ways, fans are likely to have strong preferences for one over the other.
The development of Resident Evil Requiem is heavily inspired by the success of previous games like Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 Remake. These titles, which effectively blend survival horror with action, have significantly shaped the direction of the ninth main installment, creating immersive and frightening experiences for players. A key decision for the game is to alternate between playing as Leon and Grace throughout the story, a choice that could potentially have unforeseen effects.
Resident Evil Requiem Features Incredibly Different Gameplay For Both Leon & Grace

Okay, so from what I’ve seen of Resident Evil Requiem, it looks like they’re really leaning into action for Leon. He plays a lot like he did in the RE4 Remake – lots of martial arts and knowing how to fight infected, taking on tons of enemies. But with Grace, it feels more like classic survival horror. She doesn’t have any experience fighting the undead, so she’s mostly avoiding direct fights, which makes sense for her character!
The game is structured with distinct sections, each experienced through a different character with a unique combat style. Leon is a seasoned fighter who directly confronts large groups of infected using both hand-to-hand combat and skillful shooting. In contrast, Grace prefers to avoid enemies whenever possible, focusing on evasion and quickly moving past them rather than engaging in prolonged fights.
Grace’s sections of the game feel more like the original Resident Evil 2, focusing on surviving with limited resources instead of overwhelming firepower. This creates a strong sense of tension, as she needs to cleverly use her surroundings to overcome challenges. Some players might find Grace’s gameplay delivers a more authentic horror experience, while Leon’s feels more like an action-packed horror movie.
Action Horror Fans From RE4 May Only Like Half Of The Game

Most people recognize that Resident Evil 4 moved away from the intensely scary, limited gameplay of classic survival horror games like Outlast or Silent Hill. Even newer Resident Evil games, such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Village, feature more action, letting players find and use lots of weapons against terrifying creatures and bosses. This is quite a change from the very tense, confined feeling of the original Resident Evil, but many players still enjoy the action-packed style found in several RE titles.
While adding scarier moments could build suspense in the new Resident Evil game, some players might dislike feeling powerless. In Resident Evil 4 and its remake, skilled players had full control over combat and could handle enemies in many different ways. However, in the upcoming game, there will be sections where players won’t be able to fight back as the character Grace, which could frustrate some fans.
Leon appears to have a wider range of abilities in Resident Evil Requiem than in previous games, so switching to play as Grace could feel quite different. While Grace does have a gun given to her by Leon, it seems like a last-resort option rather than a reliable weapon. She might be able to use it to briefly stun enemies and create openings for escape during critical moments. Players who enjoy the strong, capable feeling of playing as Leon might find Grace’s gameplay less satisfying.
Survival Horror Enthusiasts Will Have Limits On The Amount Of Scares They Experience

However, many players find Grace’s sections in Resident Evil Requiem to be the most fun. While Resident Evil Village received praise for its genuinely scary moments – particularly those where players were defenseless – some prefer a more tension-focused experience. Similar to games like Alien: Isolation and Amnesia, these players enjoy being forced to navigate frightening situations without relying on combat.
Some players might feel that the sections featuring Leon in RE9 disrupt the scary atmosphere established by Grace’s gameplay. While Grace seems to face the most terrifying enemies and situations in the series, creating a really intense experience, switching to Leon’s more action-focused gameplay could feel like a jarring change in tone. It’s possible the shift from horror to a power fantasy will detract from the overall sense of dread.
Fans of both classic and action-focused Resident Evil games should enjoy this blend of styles, as seen through the stories of Leon and Grace. However, players who strongly prefer one style over the other might find that Resident Evil Requiem tries too hard to please everyone, and this could be seen as a flaw in the next game.
