A lesser-known film starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx is coming to HBO Max. With Jordan recently receiving an Oscar nomination and gaining more attention, viewers have been eager to find more of his work to stream.
The movie Just Mercy, released in 2019, will soon be available on HBO Max. It’s joining the streaming service on February 1st, so fans only have one day left to wait!
Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Andrew Lanham. The story comes from Bryan Stevenson’s 2014 memoir. It follows Stevenson as he teams up with Eva Ansley (played by Brie Larson) to create the Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama, and their work to exonerate Walter McMillian (played by Jamie Foxx) who was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death.
Let’s talk about the incredibly strong supporting cast in Just Mercy. Rafe Spall really shines as Tommy Chapman, and Darrell Britt-Gibson delivers a memorable performance as Darnell Houston. O’Shea Jackson Jr. is compelling as Anthony Ray Hinton, and Tim Blake Nelson, Rob Morgan, and Lindsay Ayliffe all bring depth to their roles as Ralph Myers, Herbert Richardson, and Judge Foster, respectively. Rhoda Griffis is also excellent as Judge Pamela Baschab. Beyond those key players, keep an eye out for appearances by Ron Clinton Smith, Dominic Bogart, C.J. LeBlanc, Norm Lewis, and Kirk Bovill – they all contribute to the film’s powerful impact.
Released in 2019, Just Mercy was a critical and audience favorite. As of today, it holds an 85% approval rating from critics and a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also received 14 nominations for prestigious awards and won seven, including the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards.
You know, even though Just Mercy didn’t have a huge release in cinemas, it actually did pretty well! It didn’t turn a massive profit, but it had a strong opening weekend – landing at number four – and ultimately made over $50 million at the box office, which is great considering it only cost around $25 million to make. As a film fan, it’s always good to see meaningful stories like this connect with audiences.
What’s Next for Just Mercy Director Destin Daniel Cretton?
Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Just Mercy, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31st. This will be his first film since 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and could lead to even more directing opportunities within the MCU in the future.
In November 2025, reports surfaced that Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, was already thinking about what projects to tackle after Avengers: Secret Wars. It seems this decision will largely depend on how audiences react to Spider-Man: Brand New Day when it’s released in theaters.
Back in 2022, I was already impressed with Destin Daniel Cretton and happy he was chosen to direct the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. I’ve always said, even when our movie first came out, that his talent lies in making huge-budget films—like a $150 million movie—feel surprisingly intimate and focused.
Just Mercy will be available for streaming on HBO Max beginning Feb. 1.
