Season two of The Last of Us sparked debate, and not just because of a major character’s death. The game sequel, and the HBO show adapting it, both quickly removed Joel from the story. Now, with season three confirmed to cover the events of The Last of Us Part 2, an HBO executive has suggested this season might be the show’s last. Considering the game’s storyline and the mixed reactions to season two, ending the series there could be a good decision.
According to Casey Bloys, the head of HBO and HBO Max, the hit show The Last of Us is likely to conclude after its third season. When asked by Deadline if seasons of Hacks and The Last of Us would be their last, Bloys said the final decision rests with the show’s creators. Since the third season will probably cover the story from the second game, it’s a logical conclusion for the series.
The Last of Us Season Three Explained

If you’re new to the world of The Last of Us—specifically, the original PlayStation games—the show’s third season will likely be quite different from what you’ve seen so far. Kaitlyn Dever will play Abby, a character who will have a much larger role than in the previous season. This will give viewers a new perspective on the events that led to Joel’s death and show that things aren’t always as simple as they seem, and Abby might not be the villain everyone believes her to be.
Currently, Naughty Dog hasn’t officially announced a third game in the series. Given how the second game ended, it’s unclear if a future installment would follow Ellie or Abby again, or introduce a brand new character facing the dangers of the Clickers. In 2024, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann mentioned he was exploring ideas for a third game, but no plans are confirmed yet.
Even though the TV show The Last of Us is likely ending after its third season, adapting video games into movies and TV shows is still a major trend in entertainment. This year, we’re already seeing films based on popular games like Super Mario, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, and Mortal Kombat, proving that video games are becoming increasingly popular in Hollywood. It’s even possible that video game adaptations could one day become as big as Marvel or DC movies.
