Twenty-one years ago, an episode of King of the Hill delivered what many fans consider Dale Gribble’s most surprising moment, and it remains remarkably impactful even today. The show has consistently been one of the best animated sitcoms, thanks to its realistic portrayal of everyday life. Although the characters are cartoonish, Hank Hill and the rest of the cast always felt relatable and genuine – even the more eccentric ones like Dale, who was constantly caught up in new conspiracy theories.
Dale, a close friend of Hank on King of the Hill, was known for his distrust of authority and belief that things weren’t always as they appeared. This skepticism was challenged when he began to consider the possibility that one of his conspiracy theories might actually be true. The episode “Dale to the Chief,” which aired on January 30, 2005, remains one of the most impactful and surprisingly relevant episodes for his character, even today.
King of the Hill Shocked Dale With “Dale to the Chief”
The King of the Hill episode “Dale to the Chief,” which aired during Season 9, started like any other. Hank was waiting for his new driver’s license, and Dale was convinced the government was involved in a bizarre scheme – selling kidneys on pizza! That night, Dale began reading the Warren Report, the official investigation into President Kennedy’s assassination. As his neighbor Joseph asked questions, Dale continued to study the report and ultimately concluded that the government had actually told the truth about what happened.
This experience deeply affects Dale, causing him to question all his conspiracy theories and briefly believe the government has been honest with him. He completely reverses course and becomes an over-the-top patriot, enthusiastically sharing his love of America with everyone around him. This even leads him to paint a flag on Hank’s roof, and then report Hank to the authorities when he removes it. It’s a total 180-degree turn for his personality.
I remember when things really got interesting for Hank – his driver’s license somehow listed him as female! It actually made Dale start to think the government could make mistakes, which, surprisingly, fueled his conspiracy theories even more. He used what he knew about how things work to try and help Hank get it fixed. Looking back, though, it’s one of those King of the Hill episodes that really seemed to predict where things were headed in the world – it was surprisingly ahead of its time.
King of the Hill Still Has Its Finger on America’s Pulse

A big reason fans still love King of the Hill – and why the recent revival did so well – is its accurate portrayal of society. The show excelled at creating characters like Dale, who represented the more eccentric individuals on the edges of mainstream life, and then used him to satirize the overly patriotic attitudes common in the early 2000s, even including a focus on neighborhood watch-style surveillance. This was balanced by Hank’s constant struggles with rules and regulations, highlighting the frustrations of dealing with bureaucracy.
Throughout the episode, Dale’s biggest frustration is the difficulty he faces getting his driver’s license updated to reflect his gender. The process is overly complicated and full of bureaucratic hurdles. Ultimately, it takes drastic action from Dale to finally get Hank’s license changed, revealing that the process was actually quite simple all along. This storyline highlights the idea that the U.S. government operates the same way, regardless of whether you support it – a sentiment echoed by Dale’s “love it or leave it” shirt.
Despite its focus on the U.S. government and passionate patriotism, the episode “Dale to the Chief” is ultimately about the bond between Dale and Hank. It explores how Hank manages his friendship with Dale, even when Dale’s extreme beliefs cause problems. As usual, Hank has to help Dale regain perspective, but this time, Dale quickly returns to his normal self after the episode.
