Wonder Man is proving to be a surprising success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series significantly alters the backstory of the Wonder Man character, who first appeared in The Avengers comics as a villain who later became a hero. While trailers hinted this wouldn’t be a typical superhero story, instead offering a commentary on the current state of comic book movies through the eyes of an in-universe actor, Marvel’s decision to release all episodes simultaneously led many to believe they didn’t have confidence in the show’s potential.
Currently, Wonder Man is a huge hit for Marvel. Data from FlixPatrol shows it’s the most popular show on Disney+ worldwide, beating out The Beauty and significantly outperforming the third-ranked show, Tell Me Lies. But there’s more to the story than just those numbers.
Wonder Man quickly became a hit, topping charts in 69 countries and attracting a large audience with a score of 773. It performed better than most series, surpassed only by Netflix’s Bridgerton (913) and three Apple TV+ shows: Hijack (975), Shrinking (887), and Tehran (817). In comparison, Paramount+’s most popular show, South Park, reached a score of 279, and the highly-rated The Pitt scored 633.
Wonder Man Has a Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score

Wonder Man is proving to be a hit with both viewers and critics. It currently has a 90% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a “Fresh” rating, and a strong 89% audience score. A key to its popularity seems to be that you don’t need to be deeply familiar with recent Marvel Cinematic Universe stories to enjoy it.
Wonder Man is succeeding because of the strong connection between its lead actors, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery. Reviewers have especially enjoyed their on-screen friendship. The show is praised for being a refreshing, lower-stakes entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is considered one of the best MCU series on Disney+. While some viewers expected a more traditional superhero story, many appreciate that the show took a different approach and ultimately delivers a successful and unique experience.
Wonder Man not only tells its own story but also sets up possibilities for future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storylines. It introduces elements like the Roxxon Corporation and highlights the existing fear and distrust of superheroes, potentially paving the way for the X-Men to join the MCU and the Champions to appear in Phase 7 on Disney+. However, the show’s success isn’t dependent on these future connections. Wonder Man demonstrates a winning formula for Marvel’s Disney+ series, and the viewership numbers confirm it.
