Sir Ian McKellen Just Spoiled a Huge Avengers: Doomsday Scene

Marvel is known for both its incredible stories and the occasional accidental spoiler. The studio works hard to keep plot details secret for each new movie and show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wanting to surprise fans. However, details often leak out before release. With Avengers: Doomsday being such a massive project, spoilers are happening again – but this time, the source of the leak is particularly surprising.

I was listening to Sir Ian McKellen talk to Jake Hamilton on his podcast, Jake’s Takes, and it was amazing! He was chatting about his whole career, but he spent a good bit talking about playing Magneto in X-Men. And get this – he accidentally hinted at a potentially huge scene that might be in the upcoming Doomsday movie! It was a total slip of the tongue, but it sounds like something really big is coming.

I was listening to Sir Ian McKellen talk about movie effects, and he jokingly mentioned that he’d ‘destroyed New Jersey’ the other day – he quickly added that he probably shouldn’t have said that, which made everyone laugh!

Could Magneto Destroying New Jersey Be Connected to the Scarlet Witch?

Ian McKellen jokingly mentioning he “destroyed New Jersey” is a big hint for Marvel fans, especially those curious about how Scarlet Witch’s story connects to future events. For those who need a reminder, Westview, New Jersey, was the town Wanda Maximoff controlled in the Disney+ series WandaVision. That series directly led into the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which showed Wanda exists across different universes and ultimately depicted her death. Wanda’s death appeared to be confirmed in the WandaVision episode “Agatha All Along,” also set in Westview, as her passing broke the spell she’d cast on Agatha Harkness.

Here’s the important part: for many fans, Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) is best known as the daughter of Magneto. Though her backstory has been updated over the years, this remains her most famous origin. Now that the original X-Men, including Magneto as played by Ian McKellen, are entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe to fight Doctor Doom – and are established as coming from another universe – it’s entirely possible that a reality exists where Wanda is Magneto’s daughter. If that’s true, her death could be devastating enough to drive Magneto to destroy an entire state.

You know, after hearing what Ian McKellen said, I’ve been thinking it might not be about Scarlet Witch at all, but Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan is a Jersey girl, and we already know she’s got the X-gene! Kevin Feige hinted they haven’t shown us everything from the Doomsday casting, so it feels pretty likely that Magneto showing up in New Jersey has something to do with Kamala being a mutant. Though, honestly, why he’d be destroying New Jersey… that’s the part I’m still trying to figure out!

McKellen Had High Praise For His “Younger” Fellow Marvel Stars

Putting aside a slip of the tongue that briefly hinted at plot details for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Ian McKellen also shared his positive experiences working with the other actors in the Marvel films. He playfully called himself and Patrick Stewart ‘old-timers,’ but noted that the younger cast members were very kind and respectful to them.

He enjoyed working with the younger actors, who were very self-assured thanks to their experience in numerous other films. While he and Patrick felt like veterans, the younger cast members were very considerate, making sure they were comfortable with things like seating arrangements.
