Throughout his impressive career, Denzel Washington has collaborated with many talented directors, but his work with Antoine Fuqua stands out. Fuqua directed Washington to an Academy Award for Training Day and launched his Equalizer film series. When Washington and Fuqua team up, audiences are almost guaranteed a thrilling experience. Their films are incredibly enjoyable and perfect for repeated viewings, which is why they’re popular on streaming platforms. Currently, Netflix is benefiting from their latest project – a fresh take on a beloved classic.
From January 19th to 25th, the movie The Magnificent Seven reached number 6 on Netflix. It quickly gained popularity, earning 6.5 million views and a total of 14.5 million hours of watch time. This performance was enough to surpass other films like Spectre and Max, and it marked the first week the movie appeared in Netflix’s top 10.
Why The Magnificent Seven Is a Streaming Hit on Netflix

There was a lot of excitement around the 2016 release of The Magnificent Seven. It was a remake of a classic Western, and the team behind it – Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua – had recently scored a hit with The Equalizer. They reunited for this film with a strong cast including Ethan Hawke, Washington’s former co-star, and Chris Pratt, who was becoming a major action star. However, despite all this potential, The Magnificent Seven didn’t quite live up to expectations. It received a middling score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $162.3 million globally on a $90 million budget.
Although reviews for the film were a bit varied, it’s clear why The Magnificent Seven is proving popular on streaming services. Director Antoine Fuqua’s films aren’t usually award winners, but they’re consistently enjoyable, and this one is no different. A lot of the fun comes from watching the star-studded cast bounce off each other and build camaraderie throughout the story. Plus, with Fuqua directing, the movie delivers plenty of thrilling action, making it perfect for relaxing entertainment. It’s a polished and satisfying film.
One reason viewers are enjoying The Magnificent Seven on Netflix is the recent addition of other popular Denzel Washington films. Both Man on Fire and Glory became available in January, and people who watched those might then seek out more of his work, making The Magnificent Seven a good choice. Man on Fire was particularly popular, showing that Netflix subscribers are currently interested in seeing Denzel Washington in action.
Denzel Washington’s hinted at retirement, and I’m really curious to see if this means another film with Antoine Fuqua. It’s clear Washington wants to work with directors he respects as he winds down his career, and Fuqua definitely seems to be one of them. I’m hoping we get at least one more project from these two – honestly, whatever they come up with, it’s almost guaranteed to be a streaming success. They just have that magic together.
