Lego Marvel’s Avengers Is A Fun (And Fine) Lego Game

Following up on Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Lego Marvel’s Avengers lets you play through key moments from the first two phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like previous Lego games based on franchises like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, it recreates iconic battles, but with a Marvel twist. The game primarily focuses on The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, though it also includes levels based on other movies in the series.

The game explores this idea by letting players control characters who hadn’t been featured in the movies yet, offering a large selection of popular comic book heroes. Reviews were generally mixed, averaging around 70 out of 100 on Metacritic, with scores varying slightly between different gaming platforms.

This Lego game was enjoyable, like other titles in the series, but it didn’t try to do quite as much as Lego Marvel Super Heroes, which featured a much larger cast of characters and broader ideas. Overall, it felt familiar. Still, Lego Marvel’s Avengers remains a strong Avengers game, especially considering the inconsistent quality of Avengers games in general.

The Avengers Haven’t Really Had The Best Gaming Legacy

This is because, for a long time, the Avengers weren’t a top priority for Marvel. Though important within the Marvel stories, they didn’t reach the same level of mainstream popularity as Spider-Man or the X-Men, and were often considered secondary characters.

Marvel held onto the rights to certain characters in the early 2000s specifically to build the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the popularity of heroes like Iron Man and Thor, there weren’t many successful Avengers video games to capitalize on that success. Early game adaptations of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor were generally underwhelming, and Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth didn’t really stand out. Lego Marvel’s Avengers remains a standout title after almost ten years because there haven’t been many games solely focused on the Avengers team. Instead, recent Marvel games like Midnight Suns, Marvel Rivals, Marvel Snap, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls feature the Avengers alongside a wider cast of characters. Fans are hopeful that upcoming games from Motive Studio (Iron Man) and Skydance (Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra) will offer a more polished take on the Avengers in gaming, potentially establishing a new standard for how Marvel’s flagship superhero team is adapted into video games.
