Steven Spielberg Achieves EGOT Status With First Grammy Win

For over fifty years, director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams have collaborated, and their creative partnership continues to produce remarkable and innovative results.

Steven Spielberg achieved EGOT status on February 1st at the 2026 Grammy Awards. He won Best Music Film for his work as a producer on the 2024 documentary Music by John Williams. You can find a complete list of the 2026 Grammy winners here.

In a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the 79-year-old filmmaker expressed gratitude to the Grammy voters for recognizing Music by John Williams. He said the award means a great deal to him and the entire Amblin team, including Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and extended congratulations to their partners at Imagine and The Walt Disney Company. He added that the recognition confirms something he’s known for over 50 years: John Williams’ impact on music and culture is enormous, and his talent and lasting influence are unmatched. He also shared his pride in being connected to the beautiful film directed by Laurent Bouzereau.

With his first Grammy win, Steven Spielberg joins a select group of only 22 people who have earned competitive awards in all four major entertainment fields: Grammy, Oscar, Emmy, and Tony. (Including honorary awards, he’s the 28th artist to achieve this.)

Steven Spielberg has also won an impressive array of awards beyond his directing work. He’s a four-time Emmy winner for producing shows like The Pacific and Band of Brothers, and has earned three Oscars – including for directing and producing Schindler’s List and directing Saving Private Ryan. He also has a Tony Award for producing the musical Strange Loop.

Steven Spielberg and John Williams have collaborated for over 50 years, starting with Spielberg’s first feature film, Sugarland Express, in 1974. Williams, now 93, is the composer behind the scores of many beloved films, including Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Empire of the Sun, Hook, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List. He’s also famous for composing the theme from Star Wars and numerous other memorable pieces.

In a 2012 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Steven Spielberg described John Williams as remarkably adaptable as a composer. He explained that Williams consistently reinvents his style for each new film they work on, showcasing his ability to change and evolve with every project.

Only a select few people have achieved EGOT status – winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. These include Rita Moreno, Viola Davis, Jennifer Hudson, Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, and Robert Lopez, the composer of The Book of Mormon. Notably, Robert Lopez is the only person to win all four awards twice.
