The third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the most significant one so far, featuring intriguing predictions from a fortune teller. Prophecies have been a recurring element throughout the A Song of Ice and Fire universe, including both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Characters like Quaithe and Melisandre previously offered prophetic visions, and House of the Dragon included dragon dreamers such as Helaena Targaryen. This new series continues that tradition. Please be aware that the following contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and reveals details about the future of Dunk and Egg as established in Game of Thrones lore.
This episode will be most remembered for revealing Egg’s true identity: he is actually Aegon Targaryen, the son of Prince Maekar and brother to Aerion, Daeron, and Aemon. However, before the reveal, the episode hints at his lineage when Dunk and Egg have their fortunes told by a woman at Ashford Meadow. The reading begins positively, but quickly becomes unsettling.
To Dunk, the speaker promised immense wealth and success, saying he’d be richer than any Lannister. To Egg, the prediction was far more dramatic: he would become king, but meet a fiery end, and his death would be celebrated by those who knew him.
Does Dunk Become Richer Than A Lannister?
What Happens To Ser Duncan After A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

Ser Duncan the Tall, who came from the poorest parts of King’s Landing and once had to sell a horse just to afford armor, would be shocked to learn he’d become wealthy. While he doesn’t actually surpass the immense fortune of House Lannister – one of the richest families in Westeros – he does achieve significant success and becomes incredibly rich in other respects. The fortune teller’s prediction wasn’t entirely literal, but it did come true in a different way.
Ser Duncan the Tall will eventually become a Kingsguard knight, and ultimately its leader, the Lord Commander – the highest achievement for any knight in the Seven Kingdoms. Since Dunk’s only ambition is to be a good and honorable knight, this represents complete success for him. While Kingsguard knights aren’t allowed to own land and he won’t become wealthy, he’ll be well-provided for due to his position near the king, and his true wealth will be in his honor and service, not money.
Dunk finds fulfillment in living his dream, serving his friend Aegon (who eventually becomes king), and earning a place in history as a truly great and honorable knight. Compared to the manipulative and scheming Lannisters, he’s actually the wealthier man, if you look at it that way.
Does Egg Become King & Die In A Fire?
Major Spoilers For Egg’s Future Ahead

As we’ve seen, Egg surprisingly becomes king. Considering he’s from a relatively unimportant branch of the family – the fourth son of a fourth son – he wasn’t expected to ever be near the throne. However, a series of events leads to him becoming King Aegon V Targaryen about 24 years after the events of the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. That’s the positive part of the fortune teller’s prediction, but what about the negative side?
Egg, also known as Aegon Targaryen, tragically dies in a fire at Summerhall. This event occurs in 259 AC, 26 years into his rule. The details surrounding the fire remain a major mystery in the world of Game of Thrones, but it’s known that a large blaze broke out at the Targaryen summer residence, killing Aegon, his companion Dunk, Aegon’s son Prince Duncan, and the resident Maester.
I’ve heard the story of the fire, and it’s a strange one. Apparently, Aegon became fixated on bringing dragons back – he thought it would help him control the lords of Westeros. He’d given a lot of rights and freedoms to the common people, and the lords weren’t pleased about it. Before he died, Maester Corso sent a letter describing what happened, but much of it was ruined by ink blots. What is readable… it all points to dragons and magic being involved. It’s unsettling, honestly.
Dragon blood collected around a single point, near seven eggs – an offering to the seven gods. The king’s religious advisor had cautioned against using fire magic, but it quickly spiraled out of control, creating massive flames. The heat was so intense that many perished, though the bravery of the Lord Commander helped to contain the disaster.
Egg failed in his attempt to revive dragons, and tragically, it cost both his life and Dunk’s. Interestingly, Rhaegar Targaryen was born during this same event. The fortune teller’s predictions about the young prince are currently half correct, although the prediction about widespread celebration is proving more nuanced than expected.
The celebration at Summerhall was for the soon-to-be-born Rhaegar, Egg’s great-grandchild, so there was a sense of happiness even before the tragic events that followed. This might be what the woman was talking about. However, Westeros was also a troubled place at the time. King Aegon V was loved by the common people, but many lords resented his efforts to improve their lives, as it often meant sacrificing some of their own privileges. Furthermore, a group of rebels and outcasts were plotting to take control of the Seven Kingdoms, and they launched their uprising – the fifth and final Blackfyre Rebellion, also known as the War of the Ninepenny Kings – shortly after Egg’s death. For these groups, Egg’s death would have been cause for celebration.
The newest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be available on HBO and HBO Max starting Sunday, February 8th, at 10 PM Eastern Time.
