*Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 3.*
Fans finally got the answer they’ve been hoping for in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) has been acting strangely around the Targaryens, and now we know why.
At the end of the latest episode, the young squire traveling with Dunk, revealed his true identity: he’s not just Egg, but Prince Aegon Targaryen, the youngest son of Maekar Targaryen (played by Sam Spruell). Fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief!
“Dunk has absolutely zero idea,” he explained.
It’s really shocking to see what’s happening. The way Ira Parker wrote the scene is brilliant – there’s a conversation right before it where he and Raymun are talking about Makear’s kids and how troubled they are. It builds up perfectly, focusing on the youngest child, and it’s just so well executed.
I believe Dunk is deeply hurt and feels completely betrayed. Even though he’s impressed and grateful that this man saved his life, there’s a strong sense of betrayal because this man knew the risks of having Dunk as a squire. He understood it was dangerous for Dunk to be seen with him, potentially facing punishment, or being asked to do things inappropriate for someone of his station, especially considering the man’s royal status. Ultimately, it all comes down to that feeling of betrayal.

Despite the gravity of that moment, Ansell admits it was much more light-hearted on set.
We were filming at night, and it was really late – I was only nine years old, so I got tired quickly. It was around midnight when the director brought out some fizzy gummy worms to help keep me going.
It was the most important take – the one where my character has a big reveal. The director counted down, called ‘action,’ and I immediately blurted out, ‘Hold on, I still have the worm in my mouth!’ Everyone thought it was absolutely funny.
Parker noted that building up to that moment took significant effort throughout the first three episodes.
He explained to TopMob’s Huw Fullerton that it was crucial for the first three episodes to strengthen the connection between the characters and really show what their everyday interactions were like. This was because they knew significant events were coming that would permanently change their relationships.
We expanded on the novellas in that area, and I believe it’s been a worthwhile improvement.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
