Stars from the Twilight films, like Robert Pattinson in The Batman and Christian Serratos on The Walking Dead, have found a lot of success after the series ended. While the popular vampire romance launched many of their careers, leading to roles in big movies and critically acclaimed shows, fans don’t have much time left to watch one Twilight actor’s highly praised 2021 film on Netflix.
Kristen Stewart, best known for playing Bella Swan in the Twilight films, took on a very different role in Spencer. This 2021 movie, directed by Pablo Larraín, tells the story of Princess Diana during a challenging Christmas holiday in 1991, as she considers divorcing Prince Charles. Spencer will be leaving Netflix on February 8th, one year after its debut on the streaming service.
Kristen Stewart’s Spencer Is a Chilling, Claustrophobic Fairy Tale
Looking at Kristen Stewart’s movies, Spencer ranks as one of her best, currently ninth-highest rated on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is “Certified Fresh” on the site and has won several awards, placing it among her top ten films like Love Lies Bleeding and Love, Antosha. This makes sense, as Spencer isn’t a typical biography; it’s a beautifully atmospheric and artistic film that feels more like a thought-provoking story than a straightforward retelling of events.
Pablo Larraín’s direction transforms what seems like a perfect royal Christmas into a deeply unsettling and haunting portrayal of the emotional strain of royal life. The film uses a disturbing score by Jonny Greenwood and frequent close-up shots to build an intense, claustrophobic atmosphere that highlights Diana’s loneliness and both her inner and outward struggles. The lavish but confining sets and costumes, along with the remote and imposing Sandringham Estate, further emphasize her sense of being trapped. Kristen Stewart gives a standout performance as the princess, brilliantly portraying her vulnerability, anxiety, and eventual strength, earning her nominations for several awards, including the Academy Award and a Golden Globe. While it didn’t resonate with all viewers (receiving a 52% rating on the Popcornmeter), the film was a financial success, earning $25 million worldwide on an $18 million budget.
Where to Stream Spencer After It Leaves Netflix?
After February 8th, it will be harder to watch Spencer because it’s leaving Netflix. Currently, the movie isn’t available on any other streaming services, and there are no plans for it to be added to one soon. While Spencer might return to streaming in the future, viewers will need to rent or buy it online for now.
