Sometimes, later on, it felt like it was telling us something instead of showing us, but at its heart, the show was always, always real. It wasn’t afraid to be itself, and that’s rare. As one critic put it, Black-ish really stood out, not just compared to the other family sitcoms on ABC, but on television as a whole, because it wasn’t afraid to be funny while also being meaningful.
