The Marvel Cinematic Universe revolutionized filmmaking by creating extended, connected storylines across multiple films. This approach allows actors to develop their characters over many projects, but unfortunately, not all actors get that chance. Some only appear in a single film or have their storylines cut short.
Fans generally accept when characters, particularly villains, don’t have much screen time. But occasionally, Marvel’s decision to kill off a character has sparked significant anger among fans. Now, an actor who experienced a particularly difficult reaction from the audience is speaking up and directly addressing the negative feedback.
Taskmaster: One of the MCU’s Biggest Mistakes

Olga Kurylenko is an actress famous for her roles in action movies like xXx with Vin Diesel, the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, and the movie Hitman (2007). That’s why it was surprising when Marvel Studios kept her character in Black Widow a secret until the very end of the film. Kurylenko played a female version of the villain Taskmaster, reimagined with a new backstory as “Antonia Dreykov,” the daughter of General Dreykov (Ray Winstone). Dreykov was the Soviet commander who created the Black Widow program and ran the Red Room, its training facility.
The MCU’s portrayal of Taskmaster fit the storyline of the Black Widow film – Natasha Romanoff thought she’d accidentally killed Dreykov’s daughter – but it significantly changed the character’s comic book origins. Marvel Studios also didn’t realize how popular Taskmaster was with comic fans. He’s been a consistent figure in Marvel comics for years, usually as a trainer for villains. The comic book version of Taskmaster (Anthony “Tony” Masters) is a lively, charismatic New Yorker, a stark contrast to the emotionless character presented alongside Black Widow. It briefly seemed Marvel might give Taskmaster a more substantial role as an anti-hero in the Thunderbolts film, but ultimately, they used him as a misleading element. Despite being heavily featured in trailers and promotional materials with altered scenes, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster is quickly killed off during the very first meeting of the Thunderbolts team.
Taskmaster Actress Addresses Fan Backlash to Her MCU Arc

Okay, so as a big movie fan, I’ve been following the whole Taskmaster situation, and the fan reaction to how the character’s been handled lately has been intense. Seriously, there’s even a hashtag – #JusticeForTaskMaster – going around, though it’s a little unclear exactly what people want. Do they want Olga Kurylenko to get another shot at the role, or do they want a complete reboot? Either way, Olga herself seems really appreciative of all the support. She actually told ComicBook Movie, while promoting her new film Misdirection, that she’s grateful for everyone speaking up.
Honestly, hearing that meant the world to me and really touched my heart. I’m so incredibly grateful for all the support. I never imagined I’d gain such an amazing following, and I’m really touched by how much everyone is rallying behind me – it’s just so sweet!
Olga Kurylenko has been following the fan campaign, #JusticeForTaskMaster, and even reached out to the person who started it. She explained that she connected with him on Instagram, thanked him for his support, and appreciated his kindness. She’s been actively involved in responding to the fan outcry.
Honestly, I don’t think the campaign to ‘fix’ the Taskmaster character (#JusticeForTaskMaster) is going anywhere. With the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies, Marvel has a perfect opportunity to essentially hit the reset button on the entire MCU. They can bring in characters like the X-Men, recast some of the originals, or even pass on those iconic roles – think a new Iron Man or Thor! A lot of us would probably love to see a Taskmaster who’s much more faithful to the comics as part of that revamp, and a fresh start for the character, free from the issues with the previous portrayal. It’s a shame, because Olga Kurylenko deserves more credit for what she did bring to the role, and it’s frustrating to think about the potential the character had that we never got to see.
Look, I love the MCU, and they usually nail things, but Taskmaster feels like a real missed opportunity. It’s frustrating because the character has so much potential! If you’re as interested in discussing him as I am, the ComicBook Forum is a great place to share your thoughts. And if you want to revisit his story in Black Widow and the upcoming Thunderbolts, you can stream them both on Disney+.
