Some Pokémon get more attention than they deserve. They’re popular not because they’re incredibly powerful or useful in battle, but because they’ve been heavily promoted and become well-known faces of the franchise. While they might have a cool design or bring back fond memories, a closer look at their abilities often makes you question why they’re considered so great.
A common issue with popular Pokémon is that they tend to steal attention from Pokémon that are just as good, but less well-known. While everyone focuses on the established favorites, many deserving Pokémon get overlooked, remaining obscure except to dedicated fans or competitive players.
10. Charizard
Charizard is definitely one of the most recognizable Pokémon, but many fans think it’s more popular than it is powerful. Its fame comes mostly from being a central figure in the early days of Pokémon. While it seems strong, Charizard actually doesn’t perform as well as some other Pokémon. Its Fire and Flying type combination makes it weak against Rock-type attacks, and even with its Mega Evolutions and Gigantamax form, its core stats aren’t particularly impressive when compared to other top-tier and legendary Pokémon.
I’ve noticed that Charizard always seems to be the star of the show among the original Kanto starters. While Pokémon like Blastoise and Venusaur often get overlooked, Charizard is constantly featured – it gets special forms and is all over the marketing. Honestly, it sometimes feels like its popularity is just because it’s the favorite, rather than because it’s particularly strong or well-designed.
9. Lucario
Lucario is a Pokémon that became incredibly popular quickly, but its performance in battle doesn’t quite live up to the hype. It debuted in Generation IV and gained a large fanbase due to its cool appearance and prominent role in the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. While often presented as a powerful Pokémon, Lucario is actually quite fragile. Its Steel and Fighting type combination offers some defense, but it lacks overall bulk and usually needs to use setup moves like Swords Dance or Nasty Plot to become truly effective, making it a somewhat risky pick for competitive battles.
Lucario is versatile and can learn a lot of different moves, but it doesn’t truly excel at any one thing. While it’s reasonably strong offensively, other Pokémon often perform the same roles better. Plus, its popularity in games outside the main series and as a merchandise item has created a lot of hype, potentially overshadowing other Pokémon that deserve more recognition.
8. Garchomp
Garchomp is often considered a top-tier Pokémon in battles, but it’s a bit overrated. While definitely strong, it’s not as unbeatable as some players believe. Its major weakness to Ice-type attacks and lack of natural speed make it fairly easy to defeat if you’re prepared. Pokémon like Mamoswine and Weavile can quickly take it out.
Garchomp is so popular in both competitive and casual Pokémon battles that seeing it constantly can get tiring. Although it’s a strong Pokémon, it often outshines other Dragon-types, like Hydreigon and Salamence, which can actually be more adaptable or fill different roles in a team.
7. Pikachu
It’s no surprise Pikachu is so famous as the official mascot of Pokémon. However, when you look at how well it actually performs in battles, its popularity seems a bit much. Pikachu’s stats are quite low, and even with an item boost, it doesn’t excel in competitive play. It stays popular simply because it’s the face of the franchise, not because it’s a powerful or adaptable Pokémon.
Game Freak’s focus on Pikachu has resulted in many different versions and special features, like Pikachu dressed in costumes or its massive Gigantamax form. However, despite all these variations, Pikachu remains a relatively weak Pokémon at its heart.
6. Greninja
Greninja is widely considered one of the most stylish Pokémon, largely due to its ninja-inspired appearance and prominent role in both the Pokémon X and Y video game and the animated series. Despite its popularity, many believe it’s become overhyped. While Greninja’s Protean ability and speed make it a powerful competitor, it’s quite fragile and relies heavily on accurately anticipating what opponents will do next to be truly effective.
Ash-Greninja feels like a needless addition, created simply to appeal to Greninja’s existing fans. While Pokémon like Swampert and Inteleon have more well-rounded or interesting qualities, Greninja’s popularity overshadows them. It’s a case of prioritizing looks and hype over actual depth in the Pokémon series.
5. Dragonite
Dragonite is often considered a top-tier Dragon-type Pokémon, but this reputation is largely based on fond memories rather than current performance. Although it has strong stats, its extreme weakness to Ice-type attacks and slower speed hold it back. In competitive battles, Pokémon like Salamence and Garchomp generally perform better because they are more adaptable and powerful.
Dragonite’s appearance has always been a point of debate among fans. Some feel its cute design clashes with the look of its earlier forms, Dratini and Dragonair. Although it’s a strong Pokémon, the idea that Dragonite is almost perfect seems a bit much when you consider its weaknesses and how many other powerful Dragon-type Pokémon there are.
4. Eevee
Eevee is popular because it’s cute and can become many different Pokémon, but some believe it’s overrated. On its own, Eevee isn’t very strong in battles – its stats are low, and it doesn’t have any special abilities. While its evolutions offer variety, they often aren’t as powerful as other Pokémon of the same type.
Eevee is often presented as second to Pikachu in marketing, which has ironically contributed to it being seen as more popular than it deserves. While it makes sense for Game Freak to highlight its adorable design, the constant stream of merchandise and special attention have made Eevee feel overly promoted.
3. Mewtwo
Mewtwo was once considered the strongest Legendary Pokémon, but it doesn’t seem as powerful now as it used to. While Mewtwo was incredibly strong when it first appeared, many more powerful Legendary and Mythical Pokémon have been introduced since then. Pokémon like Zacian, Arceus, and Eternatus are now just as strong, if not stronger, making Mewtwo feel less special and a bit old-fashioned.
Mewtwo’s story – a powerful Pokémon created through genetic engineering – has been told so often that it doesn’t feel as impactful as it once did. Though still a strong character, the idea that Mewtwo is an unbeatable force in the Pokémon world feels exaggerated. While Mewtwo is definitely a classic and well-known Pokémon, it’s not quite as dominant as many people believe.
2. Arceus
Arceus, often called the “God of Pokémon,” doesn’t quite live up to that title. Though it’s neat that it can change types using Plates or Z-Crystals, it usually doesn’t perform well in competitive battles because it tries to do too much. Arceus is versatile, but other Legendary Pokémon that specialize in specific areas often do a better job.
The idea of Arceus being the creator of the Pokémon world is really interesting, but it hasn’t quite lived up to that potential in the games. While its stats are decent, they don’t make it feel as powerful as you’d expect a god to be. Its impressive backstory sets high expectations, but its performance in battle is ultimately disappointing, leading many to consider it an overrated Pokémon.
1. Sylveon
Sylveon is frequently considered a top-tier Eeveelution, but its popularity in both casual and competitive battles has led many to believe it’s overrated. Although it’s a good support Pokémon thanks to its Fairy typing and strong Special Defense, it doesn’t have a lot of attacking power and can struggle against teams that use Steel or Poison-type Pokémon.
Sylveon gets a lot of attention, sometimes more than other equally useful Eeveelutions like Vaporeon and Umbreon. While it has a popular design and is well-liked, its fame doesn’t really reflect how strong it is compared to other Pokémon. It’s a good Pokémon, but many fans overestimate its power.
