Comics are uniquely powerful because they blend storytelling with dynamic action that words simply can’t capture. While it’s exciting to see superheroes unleash massive energy blasts, there’s a special appeal to classic martial arts fights. These fights build a different kind of tension and often generate more excitement than even the biggest, most explosive battles in space.
The DC Universe is full of incredibly skilled fighters, and fans love to debate who the best ones are. Today, we’re going to try to definitively rank the top ten martial artists in the DC Universe. It’s a tough call – many fighters have occasionally beaten opponents who are generally considered stronger. We’re not focusing on those one-off wins, but on each fighter’s overall demonstrated skill. Ranking power levels in comics is always tricky because storylines often change and aren’t always consistent. But with that in mind, let’s finally see how these experienced fighters stack up against each other.
10) Batman

It may be surprising to see Batman ranked tenth, but even at this position, he’s still better than most fighters who didn’t make the list. Batman is an incredible fighter, but not quite the best. What truly makes him dangerous is that he’s highly skilled in everything – fighting, intelligence, detective work, stealth, and more. He consistently ranks among the top ten in any skill he attempts. However, when it comes solely to martial arts, his skills are slightly behind those who specialize in it.
9) Connor Hawke

Connor Hawke, the son of Green Arrow, received extensive training from his father and has also developed his own unique fighting style. He’s proven himself against both skilled and dangerous opponents, notably leading the Brotherhood of the Monkey Fist and winning the challenging Lazarus Tournament, which featured elite fighters from around the globe. While an exceptional archer, Connor is arguably even more formidable in hand-to-hand combat. He has the skills to compete with the best, but hasn’t yet faced many of the top-ranked heroes on this list.
8) Constantine Drakon

Drakon is a world-class mercenary – don’t mistake him for the mystical Constantine. He’s a recurring enemy of Green Arrow, and remarkably, he’s never been defeated by either Oliver Queen or his son, Connor. Drakon is so skilled he’s consistently beaten both Connor and Speedy (Mia Dearden) in combat. He’s truly in a league of his own, making even highly skilled fighters like Connor appear outmatched. While he hasn’t been seen recently, Drakon always makes a powerful impact when he appears.
7) Wildcat

Wildcat is a founding member of the Justice Society of America and a legendary fighter. Though he has nine lives, he’s most famous for his incredible combat skills – he’s a master of all fighting styles, with a particular passion for boxing, and is considered one of the greatest boxers ever. Because of his expertise, Wildcat often trains other heroes, including Catwoman, Batman, and Black Canary. When anyone wants to become a top-tier fighter, they seek out Wildcat, solidifying his reputation as one of the best.
6) Lady Shiva

When it comes to skilled assassins, Lady Shiva is in a league of her own. From birth, she’s been rigorously trained to perfect both her physical and mental abilities, and once she fully embraced her darker side, she became an unparalleled weapon. Ra’s al Ghul, who only accepts the very best, chose her to lead his League of Shadows. She’s consistently defeated Batman, and there are very few people who can best her in a straight fight. While Wildcat can teach you skills, Shiva is the one who will push you to achieve true mastery. Don’t be fooled by her ranking at number six – it just means the top five are exceptionally talented.
5) Black Canary

Dinah Lance, also known as Black Canary, is unique on this list because she has a superpower – a sonic scream. However, she’s incredibly capable even without it. Her mentor, Wildcat, considers her his best student, which is high praise given his experience. She consistently backs up her abilities with action, recently defeating Shiva in a fight as shown in Black Canary: Best of the Best. Black Canary is a remarkably talented hero, but even among DC’s best, there are those who surpass her skill.
4) Bronze Tiger

Benjamin Turner, known as the Bronze Tiger, is a world-class martial artist. He and Richard Dragon were trained together by the same master, O-Sensei. Together, they journeyed the globe, facing incredibly powerful opponents. His abilities are so exceptional that Ra’s al Ghul once captured and brainwashed him, forcing him to fight for the League of Assassins. He quickly became their most formidable warrior, surpassing even Lady Shiva. Bronze Tiger has consistently defeated Batman in their encounters, proving to be a nearly unbeatable force, much like the other fighters on this list.
3) Richard Dragon

Richard Dragon is widely considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, right alongside his brother and best friend, Bronze Tiger. They are equally skilled, and either could be ranked here. At this level, the differences between fighters are incredibly small, but Richard Dragon earns the third spot due to his extensive travels and battles against the world’s best warriors. He was also a particularly favored student of O-Sensei. While he might not be as famous as Bronze Tiger, Richard Dragon has consistently proven he belongs among DC’s most elite martial artists.
2) Cassandra Cain

Cassandra Cain was trained from birth to be the perfect fighter, the result of her parents – Lady Shiva and David Cain, a highly-ranked assassin – intentionally raising her as a weapon. Her father communicated with her solely through body language, which allowed Cass to become an expert at reading people’s movements and predicting their attacks. She’s defeated her own mother on multiple occasions, and Batman admits he’d lose in a fight against her. Even the Bronze Tiger considers Cass the best martial artist in the world, a belief he instilled in his son. No one fights quite like Cass, but there is one person who is even more skilled.
1) Karate Kid

This Val Armorr isn’t connected to the movie – he’s a superhero who first appeared almost twenty years earlier! Most heroes from the 31st century have superpowers, but Val relies entirely on incredible skill in futuristic martial arts. Considering how much humanity advances, it’s logical that fighting techniques would be far beyond anything we know today after a thousand years. Honestly, seeing what he can do, it’s hard to tell the difference between skill and magic.
Karate Kid is an incredibly skilled fighter who has achieved amazing feats through pure talent and training. His first appearance involved a battle with Superboy, where he held his own despite being a normal human. He’s even performed unbelievable acts like stopping an earthquake with a kick and shattering meteors! He’s proven himself against powerful heroes like Mon-El and Eraqus (who once defeated Supergirl). Karate Kid represents the peak of martial arts mastery in the DC Universe, having learned from every great fighter throughout history. It would be fascinating to see him train other heroes and then have them compete to truly determine the best martial artist.
