Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is now the Sorceress Supreme, a move that’s caused a lot of debate. Traditionally, the Vishanti – powerful magical beings – choose the Sorceress Supreme, but they didn’t select Wanda. Instead, the magical artifacts Eye of Agamoto and Cloak of Levitation chose her after Doctor Doom lost his power. Because of this, the Vishanti are now trying to reclaim the role and its power, sending one of Wanda’s most dangerous enemies to challenge her. This marks a significant new chapter in the Scarlet Witch’s story.
Becoming the Sorceress Supreme means Scarlet Witch will face even tougher challenges, but let’s take a look back at some of her most formidable foes in Marvel Comics so far.
7) The High Evolutionary

The Scarlet Witch first appeared in Marvel Comics with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and was initially believed to be Magneto’s daughter. However, this turned out to be false. She and her brother, Quicksilver, were actually orphans given powers by the High Evolutionary at Mount Wundagore, who then made them appear to be mutants. This truth was revealed in 2015 in Uncanny Avengers Vol. 2 #4, establishing the High Evolutionary as both their creator and a new enemy. Though incredibly powerful, he isn’t strong enough to defeat the Scarlet Witch on his own.
6) Immortus

As a big Marvel fan, I always found the connection between Kang and Immortus fascinating. It’s wild to think that while Kang initially caused trouble for Scarlet Witch, it was actually Immortus who turned out to be the real mastermind. And the biggest twist? He was the one who officiated Wanda and Vision’s wedding! It wasn’t revealed until years later, back in Avengers West Coast #60 in 1990, when Wanda went dark again. That’s when she found out Immortus had been manipulating events all along, trying to build an empire that existed outside of time. Thankfully, Agatha Harkness stepped in, working with Wanda to reject the powers he’d given her and finally defeat him.
5) Agatha Harkness

Agatha Harkness has a complicated history with Scarlet Witch – they’ve been both enemies and allies over a long period. Now, powerful entities called the Vishanti are pushing Agatha to challenge Wanda, aiming to take away her position as Sorceress Supreme. Agatha originally trained and mentored Wanda, but Wanda also tragically killed her during a major event. Although Wanda is more powerful overall, Agatha’s greater age and experience make her a formidable opponent.
4) Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom inflicted a terrible manipulation on Wanda Maximoff. After her devastating defeats in the events of Avengers: Disassembled and House of M, he exploited her vulnerability, erasing her memories and convincing her she was in love with him to coerce her into marriage. He was simply using her amnesia to boost his own power. Fortunately, Wanda’s sons, Billy and Tommy, along with the Young Avengers, discovered what was happening and rescued her, restoring her memories. It felt right, then, that Wanda later became the Sorceress Supreme after Doctor Doom relinquished the title following his death.
3) Magneto

Magneto considers Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver his children, despite discovering he isn’t their biological father. This revelation has caused a rift with Wanda, who feels he exploited her and her brother for his own purposes. At one point, before learning the truth, Wanda even attempted to kill her father, casting a curse meant to kill anyone related to her – but the curse only affected Quicksilver, while Magneto remained unharmed. As an incredibly powerful mutant, Magneto understands Wanda deeply, making him a formidable and dangerous opponent whenever they clash.
2) Mephisto

With Scarlet Witch now the Sorceress Supreme, it will be fascinating to see how she handles a confrontation with Mephisto. Doctor Strange managed to maintain a fragile peace with the demon by keeping him contained within his own realm. But Wanda has a deeply personal and painful history with Mephisto – he’s responsible for taking her magically created twins, and Agatha Harkness had to erase the twins from Wanda’s memory as a result. This was a devastating event for the Scarlet Witch, making Mephisto one of her most bitter enemies.
1) Chthon

I’ve been following Wanda’s story, and it’s fascinating how things have come full circle with Chthon. Apparently, Wanda offered him a whole realm to do with as he pleased, in exchange for his guidance when she needs it. But it’s crazy to think that he’s also the one who’s caused her so much trouble in the past! He’s basically the reason she’s struggled with her powers and even turned evil a few times. He’s an ancient, incredibly powerful being – a demon lord of chaos, and that’s the very source of Wanda’s magic. Honestly, no one has had as much influence over Wanda as Chthon, and when it comes to her biggest enemies, he’s definitely the most powerful.
