The Hulk Just Ruined This Forgotten MCU Character’s Life Again

As a big MCU fan, I’ve always been a little bummed about Betty Ross. She was introduced in The Incredible Hulk as Bruce Banner’s love interest, and for comic fans, she’s a huge deal – General Ross’s daughter and a key part of Bruce’s story. But honestly, she kind of disappeared after that first movie, which is a shame. In the comics, though, Betty’s always been central to the Hulk’s world. They’ve both had incredibly tough lives, and you can really feel the love between them, but it’s also complicated. Especially after Betty also got gamma-irradiated, she’s carried a lot of anger and resentment, more so than Bruce, it seems. It’s a really interesting dynamic that I wish we’d seen more of in the movies!

The Hulk is changing again, and the latest story, The Infernal Hulk, is the reason. The previous volume ended with Bruce Banner and the Hulk split apart, Betty losing her powers, and a new entity taking control of the Hulk’s body. The first two issues focused on this new monster, and the third finally revealed what happened to Bruce and Betty. They’ve started fresh, and while Bruce is happy with their new life, Betty is struggling. This issue quickly reveals that Betty is dealing with more than just adjusting to a new normal – the Hulk has deeply affected her, and things are continuing to worsen.

The Hulk Has Always Hurt Betty the Most

So far, The Infernal Hulk is excellent, and the third issue is even better. It’s revealed that the Hulk actually rescued Bruce and Betty Banner, but in the process, they both lost their powers. Years ago, Betty transformed into Red She-Hulk, and more recently, she’s become a creature called Harpy, and has been hiding from Bruce for a long time, largely because he’s been the source of so much pain in her life. She even died once due to his actions. She’s lived in secrecy, been hunted by his enemies, and endured hardships that few superhero partners ever face.

The Hulk has caused immense pain for everyone, but Betty has suffered the most. She’s experienced everything Bruce has gone through, both the good and the bad. Becoming her own gamma-powered form finally gave her independence and strength, something she lacked during most of their time together. Now that power is lost, and it’s a huge loss for her.

The Hulk rescued her, but in doing so, he inadvertently ruined the one good part of her otherwise awful life. Now without her powers, she feels vulnerable and trapped, facing dangers she could previously handle with ease. The comic highlights her grief, particularly when she reflects on her ability to fly. Bruce discovers she’s been hurting herself, hinted at by bandages on her arm. It’s clear the Hulk’s actions, as they often do, have devastating consequences, and Betty is the one suffering.

Bruce becoming the Hulk again is devastating, but Betty feels like nothing else matters. The Hulk has repeatedly ruined her life, and this recent setback feels like the worst yet. In the story The Immortal Hulk, Betty resented Bruce because his presence always led to destruction. She actually found some comfort in the Hulk, as he wasn’t Bruce, but he ultimately confirmed what she’d always known: the Hulk brings disaster to everyone around him, even those he cares about.
