Wildlight Entertainment announced that the 5v5 game mode in their PvP shooter, Highguard, will now be a permanent part of the game. It was initially added as a weekend event, but because players split almost evenly between the 3v3 and 5v5 modes, the studio decided to keep the 5v5 mode available full-time.
Okay, so a lot of you were wondering about the 5v5 Raid Mode, and I’ve got good news – it’s sticking around! Wildlight Entertainment said they were super happy with how many people jumped in over the weekend to try it out. They checked the numbers, and it looks like 3v3 and 5v5 were pretty close in popularity, which is why they decided to keep 5v5 as a permanent option. Awesome!
A recent game update introduced a 5v5 mode and also boosted the game’s performance. The developers clarified that this new mode was just an experiment and wasn’t meant to replace the existing 3v3 raids, assuring players that 3v3 raids would remain available for those who prefer them.
To handle matches with more players, raids now have 10 lives instead of 6. We also made it take a little longer to respawn, giving players enough time to plant or defuse generators. Although raids can now accommodate more people, the Firing Range remains limited to groups of 3.
Dusty Welch, CEO of Wildlight Entertainment, has acknowledged that the initial announcement trailer for Highguard, shown at The Game Awards 2025, wasn’t their strongest presentation. In a recent interview, he stated, “We didn’t do a great job with our trailer, and we take responsibility for that.”
When asked if revealing the game at a major event was the best approach, Welch admitted he still wonders about that decision. He questioned if there was a better way to have announced it from a business perspective. He also discussed the difficulties of managing the negative reactions from fans who had expected a larger reveal at The Game Awards 2025.
It’s hard to say if holding the event at the Game Awards would have changed the negative reactions we received. We’ll never really know. However, game developers should definitely think about this possibility when planning future events.
The game Highguard came out on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in January, and it initially received very negative reviews on Steam. However, the developers have been working hard to improve the game and respond to player feedback, and it’s clearly paying off. As of today, Steam reviews are now “Mixed,” with 45% of players giving the game a positive rating.
