Although the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was cancelled, reports suggested it was nearly completed. A recently released unboxing video seems to support those claims.
IGN spotted a YouTube video showing the contents of an unreleased press kit for the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. The kit, which comes in a wooden box with metal clasps, includes a replica of the Dagger of Time. This version of the dagger features a redesigned look that was probably intended for the final game.
The package contains a display stand for the Dagger of Time replica, featuring the official logo for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. A video shows someone handling the dagger, confirming it’s a full-size replica.
Ubisoft cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, along with four other games that hadn’t been publicly announced. This decision was part of a larger restructuring effort by the company, which aims to refocus on creative control and ensure long-term growth.
During a Reddit question-and-answer session, a user claiming to be a developer on the game – using the name SocramVelmar – explained the cancellation. They said the team received only the explanation of “restructuring,” which caused significant anxiety within the team.
They explained the decision was due to company restructuring, but I’m really disappointed because it felt like we were almost finished with the project. I was working from home when we were told we’d need to return to the office, but then I was laid off. There was a lot of anxiety within the company, which ultimately slowed things down. Everyone internally had been hearing rumors about this for a while, and unfortunately, they turned out to be true.
It’s unclear if SocramVelmar actually worked on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. Attempts to confirm their involvement were unsuccessful because doing so could have violated confidentiality agreements. As a result, the entire question-and-answer session was flagged as “Unverified.”
The developer explained that the game’s cancellation stemmed from difficulties finalizing the gameplay experience, due to a lack of consistent direction within the studio.
The main problem was a lack of coordination within the company, and the design team struggled with this the most. They were focused on finalizing the user experience, but other teams were already heading in different directions. This constant back-and-forth caused delays and extra work, ultimately creating more issues than any external leaks ever could.
As a huge fan of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, I was really disappointed to hear about the remake being cancelled. Ubisoft said they just couldn’t get it to the quality level we fans expect, and they didn’t want to rush something out that didn’t do the original game justice. Basically, they felt it would take a lot more time and money to make it truly great, and they didn’t want to release a subpar version.
