A Surprising Shonen Jump Series Is Getting a Live-Action Movie (First Look Revealed)

A surprising new series originally featured in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump is heading to the big screen, and we’re getting our first glimpse of what to expect. The magazine has recently been introducing a wave of new titles, hoping to become popular with readers. At the same time, many older, well-loved series are also being adapted into movies and other formats, bringing those stories to life in new ways.

I’ve been following the trend of Shonen Jump manga getting live-action adaptations lately, and the newest announcement really caught me off guard. Ryo Nakama’s comedy series, High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku, is getting a live-action movie! It’s scheduled to hit theaters across Japan later this year, and they’ve just revealed the main cast along with a first-look teaser poster, which you can see below.

Shonen Jump’s High School Family Announces Live-Action Movie

I recently learned about the upcoming live-action movie, High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku, and it’s set to come out in Japan this fall. They haven’t announced an exact date just yet, and there’s no word on whether it will be released outside of Japan, so international fans will have to stay tuned. Toichiro Ruto is directing, with a script written by Makoto Ueda from Europe Kikaku. From what I’ve seen, the movie appears to be a very faithful adaptation of Ryo Nakama’s original manga.

The live-action movie adaptation of High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku stars Riisa Naka as the mother, Shizuka, Shingo Katori as the father, Ichiro, Jun Saito as the son, Kotaro, and Yuno Nagao as the sister, Haruka. The first images from the film also showcase Gomez, the family cat, who is a key character in the original series. While a live-action version might be unexpected for those unfamiliar with the show, it’s a fitting choice given the series’ silly, lighthearted, and generally low-pressure humor.

What Is High School Family?

Ryo Nakama’s manga series, High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku, began in Shonen Jump in 2020 and ran for three years, totaling over 100 chapters. The story centers around Kotaro Ietani, who is thrilled to start high school, only to discover his whole family will be attending with him due to unexpected reasons.

This heartwarming story follows Kotaro as his parents finally pursue their high school diplomas, his brilliant younger sister jumps ahead to high school, and even the family cat gets to join in! Kotaro is often mortified by his unconventional family at school, but he gradually learns just how much they mean to him. It’s a charming premise that would be ideal for a live-action film, and we’re excited to see where it goes.
