It looks like an Xbox role-playing game series is finishing up after the latest game didn’t sell well. Xbox Game Studios had a busy year, releasing several titles including South of Midnight, Gears of War: Reloaded, and Grounded 2. However, not all of these releases were hits, and one developer has decided to stop working on a series they started back in 2019.
Obsidian Entertainment has confirmed it won’t be making a third game in The Outer Worlds series. This decision follows disappointing sales for The Outer Worlds 2, which launched in October 2025, according to Microsoft. Obsidian’s studio head, Feargus Urquhart, stated the franchise is being put on hold indefinitely, with no current plans for future installments.
It’s not really surprising that The Outer Worlds 2 didn’t sell as well as hoped. Reviews for the sequel, which followed the 2019 game The Outer Worlds, weren’t as good as the first game, and many found it a little underwhelming. While players didn’t think it was a bad game, it didn’t make a big impact and hasn’t stayed in the conversation for long.
Obsidian revealed in the same report that their other 2025 RPG, Avowed, didn’t sell as well as expected. However, Avowed will continue to be developed, as it’s connected to the Pillars of Eternity series, which Obsidian started in 2015. It’s currently unclear whether Obsidian will create a direct sequel to Avowed or a new, full Pillars of Eternity game, but this series appears to be a major priority for the studio moving forward.
Xbox has a strong future for RPG fans. The reboot of Fable, highly anticipated for years, is scheduled to release in late 2026. Bethesda is also still developing The Elder Scrolls 6, and Fallout 5 will follow. This means even if we don’t see another Outer Worlds game, Xbox will still have plenty of role-playing options for players in the coming years.
