The company just released its financial results for the first quarter of 2026, and the news is huge: their latest gaming console is now the best-selling of all time, surpassing even the Nintendo DS.
Nintendo and Sony have been rivals in the gaming console market for years, with both companies creating incredibly popular systems. While Sony’s PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling console ever – having sold almost 160 million units – Nintendo’s latest console is now challenging that record and could soon surpass it.
The Nintendo Switch Has Officially Outsold The Nintendo DS
Just checked out Nintendo’s latest financial report, and wow! The Switch has officially become their best-selling console ever. They’ve sold over 155.37 million units, which is even more than the DS! I remember when the Wii was king with 101 million sold, but the Switch has totally blown past that. It’s amazing to see how well it’s doing!
With several years still ahead of it, the Nintendo Switch has already surpassed the Nintendo DS in sales and could even become the best-selling console of all time, exceeding the PlayStation 2’s impressive 160 million units sold. Considering the PS2 first launched in 2000, it would be a remarkable achievement for any console to beat its record now.
It’s unfortunate that tariffs are making it harder for the Switch to compete with newer consoles. While it still has a shot at selling more units than the PlayStation 2, the increased prices will make it more difficult to reach that goal.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Is Off To A Flying Start
Nintendo’s latest financial report reveals the Switch 2 has sold 17.37 million units since launching in 2025. This puts it ahead of the Wii U, which sold 13.56 million, and it’s quickly approaching the lifetime sales of the GameCube at 21.74 million units.
Now the big question is whether the next Nintendo Switch can keep up the success of the original, since so many people are still enjoying it. Nintendo really needs to do another presentation soon to show off what’s coming. Currently, the plans for the new Switch in 2026 look empty, and Nintendo needs to give players something to look forward to if they want to continue selling consoles.
There’s talk of a new Nintendo presentation happening soon, possibly a smaller “Partner Direct” instead of a major showcase. Nintendo is working on several highly anticipated games, but if they don’t reveal when these games are coming out, players might continue sticking with their existing Switch consoles.
