Andrew Stanton is famous for directing beloved Pixar films like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, but he’s also worked on live-action shows. Throughout his career, he’s written and directed episodes of popular series such as Stranger Things, For All Mankind, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Given his talent for science fiction, it makes sense that his new film, In the Blink of an Eye, continues that trend. It’s his first original feature film in ten years, and audiences are now getting a preview of what it’s like.
Searchlight Pictures has just released the official trailer for In the Blink of an Eye. The trailer gives viewers a look at the film’s sweeping story, which covers thousands of years of human experience. The movie tells three connected stories exploring themes of hope, relationships, and the continuing cycle of life. You can watch the trailer here:
Can In the Blink of an Eye Be a New Sci-Fi Classic?
2026 promises to be a great year for science fiction, with several exciting films planned, including Project Hail Mary, Disclosure Day, and Dune: Part Three. But before those arrive, In the Blink of an Eye aims to stand out with a big, heartfelt story about the meaning of life. The film has potential – director Andrew Stanton previously made the acclaimed sci-fi film WALL-E, and it stars Rashida Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Daveed Diggs. However, early signs suggest that In the Blink of an Eye might not quite live up to its promise, despite its good intentions.
The film debuted at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival to mostly negative reviews. Currently, it has a 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 reviews. While critics acknowledged the film’s ambitious scope, many felt the story lacked the emotional weight and complexity needed to fully deliver its message. This poor reception likely explains why In the Blink of an Eye will be released directly on Hulu instead of in theaters. Disney likely anticipated the film wouldn’t receive positive buzz and therefore chose a streaming release.
While critics haven’t loved In the Blink of an Eye, its release on Hulu could actually help it find an audience. Streaming numbers aren’t always tied to good reviews – people often choose to watch things at home, even if there’s mixed or negative buzz, simply because it’s easier than going to the theater. The film likely would have gotten lost in theaters, but now it has a good chance of becoming the go-to sci-fi movie to watch at home, and it might even reach the top of Hulu’s charts by the end of the month.
While In the Blink of an Eye might be considered successful, those involved were likely hoping for a stronger positive reaction from critics. Fortunately, director Andrew Stanton has another film, Toy Story 5, coming out in 2026 with good potential. Given Stanton’s consistently excellent work with Pixar and his deep understanding of what audiences love about their films, Toy Story 5 is expected to be both a critical and commercial success. This means Stanton is poised to have a truly winning film in 2026, one that, like his other work, explores what it means to be human.
