The highly anticipated psychological horror thriller, Cape Fear, is set to premiere worldwide. This new version brings back the acclaimed directing duo of Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, who previously collaborated on a film adaptation of the same story in 1991.
Apple TV has announced that the new limited series Cape Fear will premiere globally on June 5, 2026, with the first two episodes available immediately. Following that, a new episode will be released every Friday until July 31, 2026, and will only be available on Apple TV. The series is created and led by Nick Antosca (known for Hannibal and Brand New Cherry Flavor), who also serves as an executive producer. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams will star in the series and also work as executive producers.
The supporting cast of Cape Fear features Patrick Wilson (known for Aquaman and The Conjuring), CCH Pounder, Joe Anders, Lily Collias (who appeared in Roofman with Channing Tatum), Jamie Hector (from The Wire and Bosch), Malia Pyles (Pretty Little Liars), and Anna Baryshnikov (Dickinson).
The film’s main villain, a role previously played by Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro in earlier versions of Cape Fear, will be portrayed by Jason Wilson. Amy Adams will play his wife, Anna, and Tom Bowden is the attorney character. Details about the other actors and their roles haven’t been released yet.
The new Apple TV series, based on the 1991 Martin Scorsese/Steven Spielberg film, follows lawyers Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson) whose lives are thrown into turmoil when Max Cady (Javier Bardem), a dangerous criminal they helped convict, is released from prison seeking revenge.
The limited series Cape Fear was initially announced in November 2023, and Apple TV acquired it in 2024. By February 2025, Javier Bardem was joined by stars Adams and Wilson as leads. Filming began in Atlanta in April 2025 and concluded in October of the same year.
Apple TV’s New Cape Fear Remake Follows Two Hit Film Adaptations of the Story
The film Cape Fear draws inspiration from both John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners and the 1962 movie of the same name starring Gregory Peck, as well as Martin Scorsese’s popular 1991 remake. Both earlier versions were well-received by critics, with the 1991 film proving especially successful; it was Scorsese’s first to earn over $100 million at the box office and received nominations for many awards, including Oscars and Golden Globes.
Beyond that, the 1991 remake of Cape Fear, directed by Scorsese and Spielberg, featured Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Joe Don Baker, and Juliette Lewis. Notably, Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, and Martin Balsam – all stars of the original Cape Fear – made brief appearances in the new film.
Apple TV’s Cape Fear limited series will debut its first two episodes on Friday, June 5, 2026.
