Over the past two decades, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become famous for its compelling characters and the incredible worlds they inhabit. From the start, iconic locations like Tony Stark’s workshop, Asgard, and Avengers Tower played key roles in the storytelling. As the franchise expanded with new heroes and films, even more memorable places were introduced, creating a vast and impressive landscape for the MCU’s adventures.
Let’s explore some of the most memorable locations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how they’ve shaped the stories we’ve seen.
10) Sakaar

The Sakaar seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is quite different from its comic book counterpart. Though inspired by the Planet Hulk storyline – which featured a world governed by cruel rulers and brutal gladiatorial combat – the MCU’s Sakaar is more lighthearted. Instead of oppressive dictators, the planet is overseen by the eccentric Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). While gladiatorial contests, including those involving Hulk, still take place, the environment is far more civilized. Sakaar proved to be a significant location, as Hulk later revisited it, off-screen, in search of his son, Skaar.
9) Knowhere

As a huge fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, I’m always thrilled when we revisit Knowhere! It’s such a unique and memorable location – seriously, a severed Celestial head! It’s become a real hub for all sorts of alien life. We first met The Collector there, and more recently, the Guardians themselves used it as a base in that awesome Holiday Special. Even though Star-Lord is back on Earth now, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the MCU brings us back to Knowhere someday – there’s so much potential for more cosmic adventures there!
8) The Void

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the Void was revealed as the destination for anyone removed from the timeline by the Time Variance Authority – those who posed a threat to its stability. Originally, Kang lived there, observing and subtly influencing events towards a specific, apocalyptic future. Now, Loki has taken on that watch. The Void is fascinating because it’s a dumping ground for characters from alternate realities, including heroes from the old Fox X-Men movies, as well as individuals like Blade, Elektra, and multiple versions of Deadpool.
7) The Quantum Realm

The Quantum Realm is a key location in the Ant-Man films. It’s a subatomic world people enter when shrunk to an extreme size, essentially leaving our reality. In the first Ant-Man movie, both Ant-Man and Darren Cross traveled there. Janet Van Dyne was also stranded there for years until Hank Pym, Ant-Man, and Hope rescued her. Before Ant-Man defeated him, Kang the Conqueror also controlled parts of the Quantum Realm. This strange dimension is home to various alien life forms and was crucial to the events of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
6) Xandar

Xandar is the home world of the Nova Corps, a galactic police force. It first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, where Peter Quill was briefly seen there before being apprehended. If Marvel Studios continues to explore cosmic storylines, Xandar could become a significant location in future movies. While the potential arrival of the Annihilation Wave poses a threat, Xandar might remain a key planet until then.
5) Sanctum Sanctorum

Doctor Strange’s home, the Sanctum Sanctorum, is a central location in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, filled with incredibly powerful magical artifacts. Situated in New York City, it’s been featured in films like Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. As one of three headquarters for the Masters of the Mystic Arts—and the only one in the United States—the Sanctum Sanctorum serves as the primary base for the Sorcerer Supreme and will continue to be a key setting for all things magic in the Marvel Universe.
4) Kamar-Taj

Though Doctor Strange’s home, the Sanctum Sanctorum, is a significant mystical place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kamar-Taj is even more important. Located in Kathmandu, Nepal, Kamar-Taj is the city where those skilled in the mystic arts are trained. We first saw it when Stephen Strange traveled there to find the Ancient One and begin his superhero training. More recently, America Chavez went there to prepare for future mystical conflicts, suggesting Kamar-Taj will continue to be a key location in the MCU.
3) Avengers Tower

Avengers Tower, originally called Stark Tower, served as the primary headquarters for the Avengers in their first few movies. Powered by Tony Stark’s Arc Reactor, the tower was self-sufficient and dedicated the top ten floors to research and development. It was the site of the team’s battle with Loki in The Avengers and later where they unintentionally created Ultron. Currently, the tower remains a key location, serving as the base for the Thunderbolts (also known as New Avengers) and has been renamed the Watchtower, inspired by the Sentry comics.
2) Asgard / New Asgard

Okay, so Asgard… where do I even begin? First seen in the original Thor movie, it was this incredible, majestic realm – basically the home base for all the Norse gods, and ruled by Odin. It existed as its own separate world within the Nine Realms, but things took a turn for the worse when Hela arrived. Then Surtur showed up and, well, let’s just say Asgard was destroyed. The surviving Asgardians had to leave and find a new place to live. Talk about a rough patch! And it didn’t end there – Thanos wiped out half of them. The remaining Asgardians eventually settled in Norway on Earth, creating what they call New Asgard. It’s officially recognized by the United Nations now, and Valkyrie is their current ruler. It’s a fascinating story of loss, rebuilding, and finding a place to call home, even after everything they’ve been through.
1) Wakanda

Wakanda is arguably the most significant country in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its true nature came as a shock to the world. For generations, it appeared to be a struggling African nation, but a powerful shield concealed its advanced technology, making it secretly the most developed country on Earth. Ruled by the Black Panther, a role passed down through generations, Wakanda possessed Vibranium – a uniquely valuable resource found nowhere else. Since revealing itself to the world, and following the death of its king, T’Challa, Wakanda’s future within the MCU is now unclear.
