While Breaking Bad created a fantastic television world, its obscure animated spin-off, Slippin’ Jimmy, hasn’t contributed to that success. Fans of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are better off skipping this lesser-known series.
Some fans don’t even consider Slippin’ Jimmy part of the Breaking Bad universe, and it’s easy to see why. This animated series, focusing on a young Jimmy McGill growing up in Illinois, simply doesn’t compare to the quality of Vince Gilligan’s live-action Breaking Bad. It lacks the style and clever storytelling that made the original show so great.
Most TV spinoffs don’t live up to the original series, but Better Call Saul has long been considered a rare success – some even think it’s better than Breaking Bad. However, Breaking Bad does have one unsuccessful spinoff: Slippin’ Jimmy.
What Is Slippin’ Jimmy?
Created by Ariel Levine and Kathleen Williams-Foshee, both of whom worked on Better Call Saul, Slippin’ Jimmy is an animated series that tells the story of Saul Goodman’s teenage years. The show focuses on Jimmy McGill growing up in Cicero, Illinois, near Chicago, and his adventures with his close friend, Marco Pasternak.
I was surprised to learn that Bob Odenkirk wasn’t the only actor who played Saul! In this animated series called Slippin’ Jimmy, Sean Giambrone—you might recognize him as Ben Pincus from the Jurassic World cartoons—does the voice work. It came out all at once on AMC+ in May 2022, and honestly, the six episodes are pretty short—only about nine minutes each—and didn’t really stick with me.
Slippin’ Jimmy’s Existence Feels Like A Joke
The style and storytelling of Slippin’ Jimmy are so different from Better Call Saul that it’s easy to question if it’s officially connected to the same universe. Aside from a good impression of a young Bob Odenkirk by the actor, you wouldn’t guess this show is related to the live-action series.
If the animation quality had been better and the jokes were funnier, Slippin’ Jimmy could have been a strong addition to the Breaking Bad universe. The show also had a lot of potential in exploring the childhood relationship between Jimmy and Chuck McGill.
Currently, this series doesn’t come close to the quality of Vince Gilligan’s best work, which is surprising considering some people thought it did.
How Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul Creators Feel About Slippin’ Jimmy
Fans curious about the creators of Better Call Saul‘s opinion of the Slippin’ Jimmy animated spinoff should know that Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan weren’t involved. Although they haven’t publicly criticized the series, their lack of comment speaks volumes.
If presented as a fan project, the creators of Breaking Bad might see this cartoon as a charming and creative prequel that doesn’t affect the official storyline. However, when it’s considered part of the main Breaking Bad universe, Slippin’ Jimmy feels like a somewhat awkward detour.
