Okay, so John Cena is no stranger to high-octane action – we all saw him join the family in Fast & Furious, playing Dom’s brother in both F9 and Fast X. Now, he’s teaming up with Mattel for Matchbox The Movie, and after getting a first glimpse, I’m thinking this could be the next big thing in racing films. Honestly, it feels like a potential successor to Fast & Furious when that franchise eventually hits the finish line. It’s got that same energy, and I’m cautiously optimistic this could really deliver.
I just got a first look at the upcoming Matchbox movie from Apple TV, and the cast is amazing! They’ve got John Cena, Jessica Biel, Teyonah Parris, Sam Richardson, and Arturo Castro all starring. The images they showed were really exciting – there’s Cena running through traffic, and a huge car chase with even a helicopter! It definitely gives off Fast & Furious energy, and Variety said it’s like a fresh, family-friendly take on that franchise. I’m already hooked!

What Is The Matchbox Movie Actually About?

Mattel is hoping to repeat its recent success with the Barbie movie by bringing another one of its classic brands to the big screen. Matchbox The Movie will be a worldwide adventure centered around a group of childhood friends who reconnect with their old leader, Sean (played by John Cena), who is secretly working as a CIA agent.
Once he rejoins the team, he inadvertently involves everyone in a global mission to protect the world, thrusting their close-knit group into a world of spying and thrilling car chases.
The new movie features a tight-knit group of friends embarking on a larger-than-anticipated mission heavily involving cars and chases, drawing clear parallels to the Fast & Furious series. Like those films, the success of Fast Forever – intended as the conclusion to the current storyline – will likely depend on the strong bonds and chemistry between the actors.

The new film isn’t coming out until 2028, but it could be exactly what audiences want after the final Fast Forever movie. Mattel is fully supporting the project, hoping to create another successful film based on their many properties, and Apple TV+ proved there’s an audience for racing movies with their film F1. Everything seems to be in place, so now it’s a matter of seeing if the movie lives up to expectations and connects with viewers when it finally arrives.
Matchbox The Movie releases in theaters on October 9, 2026.
