From the very beginning of Fallout, Lucy MacLean’s difficult marriage has forced her to confront some harsh realities about whether true goodness exists. While Lucy is arguably the most genuinely good character on the show, the second season really pushed her – and viewers – to question what actually defines a person’s morality, ultimately leading to a rewarding conclusion.
Okay, so Season 2 of Fallout wasn’t perfect. I found it sometimes lost steam when it shifted away from the really engaging stories with the Ghoul and Maximus, and got bogged down in the politics happening inside the Vaults. But honestly, the finale really delivers! We get a bit more insight into the Enclave – though I still want to know so much more – and finally learn what Hank was really up to with that mind-control tech. Plus, the big question of whether the Ghoul’s family is still out there gets answered. It all wraps up nicely, even if it had a few bumps along the way.
The Ghoul Learns About the Enclave and His Family
The most captivating aspect of this episode centers around Cooper Howard, or the Ghoul, and his unsettling discoveries. Both in the past and present, Cooper begins to understand his role in the larger picture. We learn that before the bombs fell, Cooper received a call from Robert House, who acknowledged Cooper’s heroic intentions but pointed out his ultimate failure. And, unsurprisingly, the President who benefited from Cooper’s Cold Fusion technology was secretly a member of the Enclave.
Cooper is arrested and desperately asks Barbara to deny knowing him, hoping to shield their daughter from the fallout. We learn this is how Cooper unknowingly started the apocalypse. In the present day, House uses a Pip-Boy to lead Cooper to where Barbara and Janey were in cryosleep, but the pods are empty. House cruelly points out that Cooper’s hope has once again led to disappointment, even after two centuries. However, Cooper finds a postcard from Barbara with a Colorado address, suggesting his family might still be alive, giving him renewed purpose.
Lucy Says Goodbye to Her Father
Lucy also discovers a lot about herself through her father, Hank. After she stops Hank’s mind control by killing Congresswoman Diane Welch’s severed head, he reveals she was selected for her ideal personality – someone peaceful and easily controlled. It’s ironic because everything he says about Diane actually describes Lucy. However, Hank still intends to use her in another experiment to essentially revert her to being his child, but his plan fails when the Ghoul rescues Lucy.
I was absolutely floored by Lucy’s choice! Instead of choosing between saving or ending her father’s life, she did something completely unexpected. She used one of his own inventions – a chip – to essentially rewrite his memories, hoping to finally have the father she always deserved. But first, she demanded the truth, and what a truth it was! It wasn’t the Vaults that were the experiments, it was us, the people on the surface. Apparently, there are people walking around right now with mind-control chips implanted, following orders from someone, somewhere. With everything heading towards war, it really makes you question who is actually free, doesn’t it? It’s a chilling thought.
Hank uses a device to erase his memory, causing him to forget even his daughter. This also stops Lucy from discovering more about the Enclave, and it’s unclear whether this is to protect her or the Enclave itself – a mystery for the next season. Heartbroken, Lucy leaves her father and reconnects with Maximus. The show finally gives viewers a look inside the Enclave’s headquarters, revealing they’ve been secretly monitoring all radio communications, even those we thought were only being broadcast from one side.
Stephanie is one of the people sending messages, and she even married Hank before the bombs fell just to get a place in the vault. She identifies herself as Hank’s wife and urgently requests that the mysterious group begin “Phase 2,” though it’s unclear what that means. Meanwhile, Norman manages to survive the whole season, but he’s barely holding on. A mysterious killer eliminates the other vault residents, letting him escape their potential retribution but leaving him completely isolated on the surface.
Maximus Finds His Inner Hero Against Deathclaws
Maximus is struggling to fight the Deathclaws all alone. Most people in New Vegas didn’t think he could win, but Thaddeus placed a bet on him and even managed to shoot a few times before losing his arm. When Maximus’s power armor is destroyed, he climbs out of it, shocking a bystander who realizes he’s just a child. Despite being completely exposed, Maximus bravely gets ready to face the Deathclaw, until someone arrives to assist him.
Maximus finds Lucy again, but she feels responsible for the upcoming war. Shortly after they escape the Deathclaws, Mr. House’s image flickers on a nearby screen. Fans of Fallout haven’t seen the last of him, and he may finally reveal information that Hank kept hidden from Lucy. Think of him as a highly intelligent, somewhat arrogant virtual assistant with a knack for numbers.
Fallout raised a lot of questions and left viewers wanting more answers. We still don’t know how Cooper became separated from his family after the bombs fell, and the Enclave remains a huge puzzle. Plus, the meaning of ‘Phase 2’ is still unclear.
If you’re curious about what happened to the Brotherhood of Steel after Maximus departed, the scene after the credits explains it. Quintus has become obsessed with building “Liberty Prime Alpha” – a powerful weapon from the Fallout games – and now calls himself Quintus the Destroyer. In Season 3, Lucy and Maximus will face a threat bigger than just Roman cosplayers.
Fallout is available to stream on Prime Video.
