ARC Raiders’ Success Has Been Surprising Says Parent Company CEO

It’s been amazing to see how well ARC Raiders has done! The game has sold over 12 million copies and remains incredibly popular, even though it was released back in October. Junghun Lee, CEO of Embark Studios’ parent company Nexon, recently admitted in an interview that this level of success was unexpected.

Lee expressed surprise at the success of ARC Raiders, stating it’s performed roughly twice as well as he originally predicted. He believes this is because the game effectively blends elements from other extraction shooter games while also being mindful of players’ time. While acknowledging the gameplay isn’t entirely groundbreaking, Lee highlighted its unique combination of features as a key factor in its positive reception.

The positive reception to ARC Raiders has prompted Nexon to seek out more collaborations with developers in the West, according to Lee. He described this potential expansion as a promising and exciting possibility, though it’s still under consideration.

Lee noted that there’s growing interest in their work within the western development community. Many developers are eager to understand the collaboration between Embark and Nexon. He expressed enthusiasm for this opportunity and a strong desire to partner with more innovative western developers.

Nexon is working on several new games based on popular Western franchises. Reports from April 2025 suggest Blizzard is partnering with Nexon to create mobile games for Overwatch and StarCraft. Blizzard has been mainly considering Korean game developers for these projects, and the agreement would grant the chosen studio publishing and service rights in both Japan and Korea.

The positive reception to ARC Raiders has encouraged Embark Studios to plan even bigger and more challenging experiences for the future. In January, design lead Virgil Watkins mentioned they want to go beyond simply fighting large, six-legged robots in the game’s player-versus-environment (PvE) mode and create more complex challenges.

We’re currently satisfied with the game’s current state, but that won’t last forever. Adding too many similar elements – like another large, spider-like robot – would likely become repetitive for players. We’re considering how to evolve those experiences and create new ways to challenge players in the game’s PvE mode. A key concern is whether the game servers can support these more complex challenges.
