Todd Haynes, the director of films like Carol and May December, has received a significant update regarding his upcoming movie. Previously titled De Noche, the project lost its lead actor last year.
The film De Noche, described as a rebellious love story, is still in development with Pedro Pascal (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) attached to star. He will appear alongside Danny Ramirez, who co-starred with Pascal in The Last of Us. Ramirez has also been in Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Pascal will star as a tough detective in a gay romantic film, with Ramirez playing his younger love interest. Production on the movie, titled De Noche, is scheduled to start in March 2026.
The film is financed by MK2 Films, a French independent production company known for supporting films like Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value and Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent. MK2 is handling international sales and domestic distribution with Cinetic Media. Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films are the producers.
Haynes and Jon Raymond co-wrote the script for their new noir film. Set in 1930s Los Angeles, a time of widespread corruption and looming war, the story follows a surprising love affair between a police officer (Pascal) and a schoolteacher (Ramirez). When they become targets of the city’s corrupt political forces, the two men are forced to escape to Mexico.
De Noche Tackles a Topic That’s ‘All too Relevant’
Todd Haynes received a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination for his 2023 film, May December, which stars Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. His new project, De Noche, featuring Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez, explores themes of domestic corruption, racial exploitation, and global terror – issues Haynes feels are strikingly relevant to today’s world.
Haynes explained that the story ultimately shows how powerfully desire and love can help people overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
Fionnuala Jamison, Managing Director of MK2 Films, praised Todd Haynes’ ability to connect with viewers, noting that films like Carol and Far from Heaven have resonated internationally. She described De Noche as equally powerful and expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its strong cast led by Pedro Pascal and the collaboration with Killer Films. She stated MK2 Films is proud to be involved and share the film with potential buyers.
Besides appearing in De Noche, both Ramirez and Pascal will be in Avengers: Doomsday. Pascal will return as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, and Ramirez will reprise his role as Joaquin Torres/Falcon in the Marvel movie, which is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
A release date for De Noche has not been announced.
