2026 Has a New Frontrunner for Game of the Year (For Now)

Okay, so it’s only been a month into 2026, but I’m already starting to get a feel for Game of the Year contenders. We’ve had some solid releases already – I’ve been enjoying titles like Cairn, Pathologic 3, MIO: Memories in Orbit, and Code Vein 2. But honestly, a new game dropping this week is getting all the buzz, and it’s easily the most talked-about release we’ve seen so far this year. It’s definitely a frontrunner right now!

Reviews are in for Koei Tecmo’s Nioh 3, and they’re overwhelmingly positive. The game currently has a score of 86/100 on Metacritic, making it the highest-rated game of 2026 so far. While it shares the top spot with the Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven expansion, Nioh 3 is considered the best new, full game released this year.

Can This Game Win GOTY?

Will Nioh 3 likely win Game of the Year in 2026? It’s unlikely. Although an average review score of 86/100 is respectable, it’s generally lower than what past Game of the Year winners have achieved. Most games that win major awards typically need an average score of 90/100 or higher to be considered serious contenders.

2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for video games, with many highly anticipated titles planned for release. Games like Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, Marvel’s Wolverine, Fable, Forza Horizon 6, and especially Grand Theft Auto 6, are all expected to launch next year. With so many major games coming out, Nioh 3 could easily be overshadowed.
