A new version of the notoriously controversial film Faces of Death is coming out on April 10th. IFC Films announced on Wednesday that they’ve acquired the remake of the 1978 original, which was banned in numerous countries. This will be IFC’s largest theatrical release to date.
Daniel Goldhaber directed a new version of the controversial film Faces of Death, co-written with Isa Mazzei. The original 1978 Faces of Death presented itself as a documentary showing actual deaths, but it was later revealed that many of those scenes were staged using special effects. However, the film did include some genuine footage of real-life deaths.
Even though it was banned in several countries, the controversy surrounding the original Faces of Death actually made it a hit in theaters and contributed to its lasting reputation. The film made an incredible $35 million despite only costing $67,000 to produce. It spawned three direct-to-video sequels, and two more compilation films were created for release in countries where the original was prohibited.
The new version of Faces of Death follows a content moderator who stumbles upon videos that seem to be recreations of the shocking murders from the original film. As she investigates, she’s left to question whether the violent content she’s reviewing is staged or actually happening live, in a world where it’s increasingly difficult to know what’s real.
Barbie Ferreira, known for her role in Euphoria, stars in Faces of Death as the content moderator described in the film’s summary. The cast also includes Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Jermaine Fowler (The Blackening), and Charli XCX (The Moment).
