Mike Flanagan, the director known for horror hits like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, is heading up the next Exorcist movie. He’s assembling a talented cast, and recently added Oscar-nominee Scarlett Johansson, who just breathed new life into the Jurassic World series. Joining her is another Oscar-nominee, Diane Lane. While details are scarce, Johansson is rumored to play a mother in a storyline with young actor Jacobi Jupe, currently appearing in the acclaimed film Hamnet.
We’re now hearing more about the upcoming Exorcist reboot, including some new casting news.
Marvel’s Doctor Strange Star Joins The Exorcist Reboot

Chiwetel Ejiofor, known for his role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, is joining the cast of the Exorcist reboot. He recently collaborated with director Mike Flanagan (and Marvel’s Tom Hiddleston) on the upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, scheduled for release in 2025.
This time around, Ejiofor’s character is an ex-convict who becomes a priest – a potentially vulnerable background for anyone involved in an Exorcist story. It raises the question of whether a demon will target him because of his past.
What Is The Exorcist Reboot About (& What Is It Connected To?)

David Gordon Green breathed new life into the Halloween franchise in the late 2010s, and he attempted to do the same with The Exorcist: Believer in 2023. While the film made a decent amount of money at the box office—$137 million with a $30 million budget—it was widely criticized by both reviewers and dedicated fans. This derailed the initial plan for The Exorcist: Believer to launch a trilogy. Now, Mike Flanagan is rebooting the series, essentially starting over, even though his film will be the seventh installment overall, including a TV show from the mid-2010s.
Director David Flanagan has hinted that the upcoming Exorcist reboot won’t continue the story of the original 1973 film. Instead, it will be a completely new story taking place within the same world as The Exorcist.
Mike Flanagan has said he actively pursued the chance to work on The Exorcist because he felt he had a unique vision for the story. He wanted to create something new for the franchise – something that respected the original films but wasn’t just relying on familiar elements from the past.
The screenplay and direction by Flanagan need to be truly captivating, especially considering Chiwetel Ejiofor is the fourth cast member with previous Oscar nominations or wins.
The Exorcist will hit theaters on March 12, 2027.
