Last year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced two incredibly powerful new characters who are poised to dramatically change what’s possible within the MCU. Though taking place in a different reality, The Fantastic Four: First Steps brought Franklin Richards into the MCU as a baby, already possessing the ability to alter reality. And Marvel’s Thunderbolts revealed Bob, also known as The Sentry, a hero described as being more powerful than all the Avengers combined – a claim he proved by easily defeating them in battle, even while holding back (not to mention the added threat of his alter ego, The Void).
The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently introduced another incredibly powerful hero with the series Wonder Man. While Simon Williams, the main character, doesn’t fully showcase his abilities until the end of the season, it’s evident he has the potential to become one of the MCU’s strongest heroes, possibly even surpassing The Sentry in power.
Marvel Has a Sentry Replacement Ready in Wonder Man

Even in his short appearance in Thunderbolts, The Sentry demonstrated incredible strength, the ability to fly, and a high level of invulnerability – essentially, all the hallmarks of a classic superhero. However, he has a dangerous side: when The Void takes control, he can trap people in a terrifying shadow dimension that exploits their worst fears, leaving them emotionally and physically drained. This duality is both a challenge for the character and a benefit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as The Sentry can’t fully unleash his heroic abilities without also risking the release of his destructive powers.
Similar to Sentry, Wonder Man struggles with instability. His strong emotions can trigger powerful outbursts – one even destroyed a Hollywood studio – but he’s also incredibly durable. As a child, an outburst burned down his house without harming him at all, demonstrating his extreme resilience from a young age. The series also reveals Wonder Man can absorb and use kinetic energy. At the end, he uses this ability for a dramatic escape, either by flying or jumping an immense distance, even breaking through several floors of a high-security prison.
I’m really excited about both Wonder Man and Sentry, but it looks like we’ll be seeing Wonder Man before Sentry! Lewis Pullman is definitely coming back as Wonder Man in Avengers: Doomsday, which is awesome. We haven’t heard anything official about Yahya Abdul-Mateen II returning as Sentry, though. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel is keeping his appearance a secret – maybe it’s a major spoiler for the movie’s story!
Wonder Man Could Be Part of Doctor Doom’s Plans

There’s a lot of speculation about how Sentry/The Void will fit into the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. One popular theory is that Doctor Doom will use Sentry’s powers to defeat the other Marvel heroes. While that makes sense, another possibility is that Doom will simply let the heroes fight amongst themselves – especially considering they come from different Earths, and the merging of worlds could cause problems. Either way, Doom will need to deal with Sentry and his immense power, either by controlling him or eliminating him. This could put Simon Williams, another hero with comparable abilities, in the spotlight as well.
Considering Simon’s ability to control kinetic energy and his apparent immortality, Doctor Doom might not want to kill him. Wonder Man could actually be crucial to Doom’s plan to create Battleworld for the upcoming Secret Wars. The Marvel Cinematic Universe might use Simon Williams and his powers similarly to how Marvel Comics used Molecule Man – as Doom’s energy source to both stabilize Battleworld and fuel his reign as its all-powerful ruler.
We don’t know much about the storylines for either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars yet. Since these films are close together, the first one will likely set up events for the second. This makes it possible—and even likely—that Simon Williams will appear, and his part could even be bigger than that of the Sentry. It’s also possible we’ll see both heroes challenged in one of the upcoming movies, giving us a chance to see who would come out on top.
