Fans have been waiting a long time for Borderlands 4 to come to the Nintendo Switch 2, but it seems like Gearbox and Take-Two are now questioning if releasing it on the new console is a good idea. Take-Two has already said development on the Switch 2 version has stopped, and with the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S versions receiving criticism for performance problems, this makes sense.
Rumors suggested a February 2026 release, but a recent post by leaker NateTheHate on ResetEra indicates the Switch 2 version has been put on hold for a few months. According to the post, the effort and cost of porting the game to the Switch 2 are now considered too high given the likely sales. Previously, Take-Two acknowledged that initial sales figures were lower than expected, but they remain committed to supporting the game through Gearbox.
It’s disappointing that Switch 2 owners might miss out on a game we really enjoyed – a strong entry in a series known for its clever humor, great gameplay, and compelling story. But it’s probably a good idea to avoid releasing a version on the new console that doesn’t meet players’ high standards.
Honestly, I’m not holding my breath for Borderlands 4 to come to the Switch 2 – it doesn’t look likely right now. But hey, at least those of us on other platforms have a lot to look forward to! They’re promising tons of free updates and paid DLC, and the first big story expansion, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, sounds awesome.
