With so many excellent first-person shooter games being released, it’s understandable that some great ones get overlooked. Occasionally, a truly special game doesn’t find its audience and fades into obscurity, which is a shame. It just shows how many fantastic games we’ve had in the last twenty years or so, but it’s still disappointing when a gem goes unnoticed.

There are many great shooting games people have overlooked, but one truly deserves more recognition: Halo 3: ODST. While it received good reviews when it came out, its price and the high expectations surrounding it held it back. Consequently, this excellent game is often overshadowed by the main Halo trilogy and its incredibly popular sequel. However, ODST offers a unique experience that sets it apart, making it stand out even among such strong competition.

Halo ODST Is One Of The Best FPS Games

Calling Halo 3: ODST underrated isn’t accurate. It was a major commercial hit, quickly becoming one of the best Xbox games ever, and it’s still incredibly popular with fans. While it’s not overlooked, ODST doesn’t always receive the full recognition it deserves. It’s a truly outstanding first-person shooter and offers a unique gaming experience.

The game hasn’t gained widespread popularity, likely because of where it falls within the Halo series and the negative reaction to its original price. Many recent games, like Concord, have suffered from similar pricing issues. Adding to the problem, ODST‘s campaign, while considered one of the best first-person shooter campaigns ever made, is relatively short. Players who paid $60 for the game felt it shouldn’t have been completable in just a few hours.

Although players who discovered the game later and paid a lower price have generally had a positive experience, the initial disappointment of those eager to play at launch has negatively impacted its lasting popularity. However, the game’s biggest challenge was likely being released between the hugely successful Halo 3 and the fan-favorite Halo: Reach.

The game was also held back by being labeled as part of the Halo 3 series, which created expectations that ODST was trying to move away from. This ultimately caused ODST to be overlooked, even though it sold well and received positive reviews when it first came out. It’s a shame, because ODST isn’t just one of the best Halo games—it’s a first-person shooter that took risks and offered a truly unique and impactful experience, one that very few games have managed to match since.

There’s Nothing Like Halo ODST

Halo 3: ODST feels quite different from the main Halo games and even from Halo: Reach. While Reach shared a similar serious tone with the original trilogy, ODST focuses on a more personal story. It’s told in a unique way, creating a haunting atmosphere that captures the emptiness left by war and the deep sorrow of loss.

Honestly, playing ODST felt totally different from other Halo games. Instead of always being a super-soldier, I felt way more vulnerable, and it really worked with the story. It shifted the game into something closer to a survival horror experience. I remember creeping through these dark, abandoned city streets, with rain pouring down and jazz music playing – it was seriously atmospheric. There were a lot of moments where you just walked, and that actually added to the tension and loneliness. While other Halo games are non-stop action, ODST embraced those quiet, scary moments of being lost, cold, and just trying to survive. It was a really cool change of pace.

As you’d expect from a Bungie game, moments of calm are mixed with action sequences shown through flashbacks. But even these fast-paced parts feel different from typical Halo games – they’re more intense and gritty, like the campaigns in classic Call of Duty. The story jumps back to a mysterious city after every fight, which adds to the suspense and builds toward a very rewarding ending.

We May Never Get Another Game Like ODST

While Spec Ops: The Line also receives praise for its unsettling mood and unique approach, no other game has quite captured the same feeling as Halo 3: ODST. Its somber music, desolate environments, and emotionally resonant story set it apart. ODST also stands out as a particularly experimental and bold installment in the shooter genre. This isn’t to say other games don’t explore the grim realities of war with strong atmospheres, but ODST feels different.

I always thought Gears of War nailed the gritty, atmospheric vibe, and EA took a shot at it with Battlefield One, though it was pretty bleak. But Halo 3: ODST really surprised me after finishing the main trilogy. It felt like Bungie was saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got more stories to tell in this universe!’ Reach kind of built on that. While it mostly stuck to the classic Halo formula, you could definitely feel that ODST vibe in some of the missions, especially New Alexandria and Lone Wolf – it wasn’t just the same old thing.

It’s a real loss that we haven’t seen more of ODST. It wasn’t just a side story; it offered a unique Halo experience that was just as captivating as the main games, even without Master Chief. Sadly, a sequel seems unlikely, and it’s hard to imagine another big-budget Halo game taking such a creative risk. If you haven’t played ODST or haven’t revisited it recently, I highly recommend it. Just grab some headphones and be prepared for an emotional ride.
