Disney announced this week that Josh D’Amaro, currently Chairman of Disney Experiences, will become the new CEO, taking over from Bob Iger in March. While many predicted this move, it does raise questions about the future direction of the company and how D’Amaro will impact Disney’s creative projects – similar to the uncertainties when Bob Chapek became CEO in 2020. Only time will tell how his leadership will unfold, but so far, it appears to be a positive choice.
With Disney recently announcing a new CEO, D’Amaro, and Lucasfilm also seeing a leadership change with Kathleen Kennedy’s departure, Marvel fans began to speculate about the future of Kevin Feige. A new report from Deadline confirms Feige isn’t planning to leave Marvel anytime soon, though it does suggest a potential timeline for how long he might stay.
Kevin Feige Will Continue to Lead Marvel Into Its Next Era
There’s been a lot of speculation about Kevin Feige’s future, including rumors he might move to Lucasfilm because of his love for Star Wars. Last year, reports surfaced that Warner Bros. even tried to recruit him to lead DC Comics’ film efforts. However, it’s now clear that Feige is dedicated to staying with Marvel and continuing to develop its superhero movies.
A new report from Deadline indicates that Kevin Feige will remain President of Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer of Marvel. His main focuses right now are the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film this December and getting the X-Men franchise going again. Now that Marvel Studios fully owns the rights to the X-Men, bringing these characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a major priority. We’ve already seen some X-Men characters in Deadpool & Wolverine, with more expected in Doomsday, and a brand new X-Men movie is officially in development, to be directed by Jake Schreier, who also directed Thunderbolts.
While it’s not official yet, Kevin Feige is expected to remain in charge at Marvel through Avengers: Secret Wars and the phase of movies that follows. Feige, the producer and Oscar nominee, has described this next period as a “soft reset” for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel hasn’t announced its plans for after Secret Wars (scheduled for December 2027), but Feige has hinted that they’ll be simplifying things to ensure all their heroes can exist together in one unified universe.
As a huge movie fan, I remember reading what Kevin Feige said to Variety last summer, and it really stuck with me. He admitted ‘reboot’ can be a bit of a frightening term! He explained it doesn’t necessarily mean starting completely over, but more like a reset, streamlining everything into one consistent timeline. And he hinted that the X-Men will be the next big property to get that treatment – which, honestly, I’m incredibly excited about!
It’s understandable why Kevin Feige wants to lead the new X-Men movies. He started his Hollywood career working on the original X-Men films at Fox, assisting executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Because of this history, the X-Men hold a special place for Feige, and he’s eager to ensure their success. Now, with more creative control, he can finally bring them into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside other popular heroes.
While Marvel hasn’t announced an official release date for the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2028 appears to be the earliest possible premiere date. This means Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel, will likely continue in his role for at least two more years, and fans would probably welcome him staying on even longer.
