A 2000s Cult Classic Family Trilogy Is Now Streaming on Tubi (But There’s Something Missing)

Families looking for a fun movie night on Tubi now have access to a popular trilogy from the 2000s. That decade produced many classic kids’ films like Finding Nemo, Harry Potter, and Holes, but these three new additions to Tubi—available starting in February 2026—really capture the unique, energetic spirit of the time. They’re a bit wilder than most family movies, too!

The first three Spy Kids movies – Spy Kids, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over – are now available to stream on Tubi for free, starting February 1st. These films, directed by Robert Rodriguez, are known for their wild, imaginative action and spy adventures. While the original trilogy is streaming, the later installments, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World and Spy Kids: Armageddon (released in 2011 and 2023), aren’t currently included. The first two Spy Kids films were critically acclaimed, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows siblings Carmen and Juni Cortez as they discover they’re destined to become secret agents and must rescue their parents and protect the world.

Spy Kids Is a Chaotically Fun Family Adventure

It’s difficult to find a movie today that feels quite like Spy Kids. Once called a mix of Willy Wonka and James Bond by The Guardian, the film stood out for its focus on kids, its over-the-top early 2000s style, its homemade-looking special effects, and its wildly creative ideas – remember characters like Floop’s Thumb Thumb or the Toymaker’s virtual reality world? No film since has really captured that same magic, except for the Spy Kids sequels themselves. The series was special because it appealed to everyone, with incredibly famous actors – especially in Spy Kids 3, which featured stars like Sylvester Stallone and George Clooney – and a refreshing story that put kids in charge as the heroes, rather than focusing on adult spies.

The first three Spy Kids movies are a fantastic example of imaginative and energetic children’s filmmaking, and they remain enjoyable and nostalgic to watch even now. However, the later films, All the Time in the World and Armageddon, didn’t recapture the same spark. While Armageddon tried to recapture the positive spirit of the originals – and actually received slightly better reviews than Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over – it still felt flat compared to the beloved first three installments.
