Disney’s Next Big Fantasy TV Series Finally Gets A Major Update After Three Years

As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve been loving what Disney’s been doing lately, especially with Percy Jackson and the Olympians which is already heading into its third season! But it sounds like Percy Jackson isn’t the only magical world Disney’s building. We finally have some news about another potential fantasy series they’ve been working on – and it’s been three years since we last heard anything about it!

Disney is moving forward with its planned television adaptation of Christopher Paolini’s bestselling Inheritance Cycle novels, starting with Eragon. The project was first announced in 2022, and Variety reports that Todd Hartman and Todd Helbing will serve as co-showrunners. Marc Webb has also joined as an executive producer, working alongside Bert Salke.

Eragon’s Second Chance At Being A Major Franchise Has Finally Arrived

The Inheritance Cycle is a four-book series—Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance—that has sold over 40 million copies globally. This success led to a 2006 film adaptation of Eragon, despite the movie not performing well in theaters, even with a talented cast including John Malkovich and Rachel Weisz.

The franchise is getting another opportunity to become a popular multimedia success with a new live-action series, and Disney is assembling a talented creative team to make it happen. Harthan is currently the showrunner for ABC’s High Potential and has a history of working on successful shows like Psych. Helbing co-created the CW’s critically acclaimed Superman & Lois, and also contributed to Spartacus and Smallville.

Webb has a strong track record with popular projects like The Amazing Spider-Man, (500) Days of Summer, High Potential, and Gifted. His work spans different genres – from superhero action and comedy to drama and fantasy – and with the right actors, this new series has the potential to become a successful franchise.

We’re still early in the development of this new project, but we can share the core concept: The story follows a typical teenager chosen by fate to become the first Dragon Rider in over a century. To fulfill this role, he’ll need to connect with his dragon, learn powerful ancient magic, and ultimately defeat the ruthless king who wiped out the Dragon Riders.

Eragon currently has no release date, but we’ll keep you posted when more information is revealed.
