After the movie Luther: The Fallen Sun came out in March 2023, fans anticipated more films featuring Idris Elba as the detective Luther. The movie’s ending strongly suggested where the character’s story would go next, giving him a fresh start with a new job and mission. The original BBC series had already significantly changed Luther’s path, and The Fallen Sun hinted at a larger, more complex mystery. A new movie is now in the early stages of production, and several new actors have joined the cast.
According to Deadline, Stephen Dillane (known for The Outrun), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Kyle Soller (Andor), Ian Hart (The Mosquito Coast), and Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves) will star alongside Idris Elba in the upcoming Luther movie on Netflix. The film follows DCI John Luther (Elba) who is secretly brought back to investigate a series of disturbing and random murders in London. However, Luther finds himself in danger, as it seems many people want him eliminated.
Beyond a short summary, the specifics of the movie’s story are being kept secret, and it doesn’t have an official title yet. The original Luther series, created by Neil Cross, ran from 2010 to 2019 and is now continuing as a film. This is similar to Peaky Blinders, with Cillian Murphy, which is also getting a Netflix movie this year to finish its story. Idris Elba returns as Luther, and Dermot Crowley as Superintendent Schenk and Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan will also be back.
The Upcoming ‘Luther’ Film Will Feature a Long Awaited Reunion

Netflix
According to Empire magazine, filming for the Luther movie starts this month. The film will pick up storylines hinted at in the original series, particularly the return of Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan. Alice, who first appeared in 2010, has a complex history with Idris Elba’s character, sometimes helping him and sometimes working against him. It’s currently unclear whether she’ll be an ally or an enemy in the new movie.

I’m so excited for the next Luther movie! We don’t have a firm release date yet, but filming is starting soon, so fingers crossed it might be out by the end of this year – though 2027 seems more likely. It’s great to see Idris Elba and Cynthia Eviyon Wilson working together again! Idris was fantastic in Hijack, and Cynthia was brilliant in the Slow Horses adaptation, Down Cemetery Road. Seeing these two share the screen will be amazing, especially because the first Luther film really kept the character quite alone, and this one promises a different, more collaborative story.
