Square Enix is removing one of its most popular RPGs from Steam, but there’s a positive side to the news. Over the years, the company has created many fantastic role-playing games, including titles like Chrono Trigger, NieR Automata, and several Final Fantasy installments. Many fans also enjoy their Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest games. While Square Enix offers a wide variety of RPGs to suit different tastes, most agree that Final Fantasy 7 stands out as one of their very best.
Okay, so Square Enix just announced they’re taking Final Fantasy 7 off Steam soon. But it’s not all bad! Apparently, they’re replacing the old version with a newer, updated one, which is awesome for the game’s future on the platform. There’s a catch, though – the current version is going away, so if you want it, you’ll need to grab it before they switch things over.
The Good News, and The Bad News
Here’s some good news for Steam players: the classic RPG is getting an upgrade! Currently, the 2013 version is available on Steam. While Square Enix hasn’t confirmed it, the update will likely be the same version released on the Microsoft Store in 2020 – which is also the version found on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This newer version includes many improvements and new features, like a speed boost.
The latest update will be available at no cost to existing users. If you don’t already have the current version, it’s available now for just $11.99. While not confirmed, the next version will likely cost more. Square Enix hasn’t announced a specific release date for the update, only that it’s coming soon.
Here’s the unfortunate part for current players: your existing game saves and modifications won’t work with the new version. This means anyone currently playing will have to begin a new game from the very beginning.
