Matthew Macfadyen confirmed to join The Mummy icon in new adaptation of classic tale penned by Adolescence creator

Matthew Macfadyen, known for his role in Succession, will star alongside Rachel Weisz in the upcoming crime thriller, Seance on a Wet Afternoon.

The new film will be directed by Tomas Alfredson, known for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and based on a screenplay by Jack Thorne (Adolescence). It’s the second movie adaptation of Mark McShane’s 1961 novel, following a previous version from 1964 that starred Richard Attenborough and Kim Stanley.

The story centers on Myra (Weisz), a woman who claims to be a psychic medium. She persuades her husband, Billy (Macfadyen), to kidnap a child from a rich family. Her plan is to then ‘find’ the missing boy, hoping to prove she really has psychic powers and gain credibility.

As Myra’s real motives are revealed, Billy understands that her scheme could destroy them both.

Filming has begun in the UK, but so far, no details about the actors or when the movie will be released have been revealed. We’ll share any updates as soon as we hear them.

I’ve been a fan of Matthew Macfadyen for ages – he’s brilliant! Most people probably know him as Tom Wambsgans from Succession or as the perfect Mr. Darcy in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie. But he’s been super busy lately! I just saw he was in the new Deadpool & Wolverine as Mr. Paradox, and last year he was fantastic leading the cast in Netflix’s historical miniseries, Death By Lightning.

He’s soon taking on the role of George Smiley in a new TV series based on John le Carré’s 2017 novel, A Legacy of Spies. Interestingly, Gary Oldman famously played the same character in the highly praised 2012 film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Rachel Weisz, an Academy Award winner, most recently starred in the 2023 series Dead Ringers. She’s also returning to her famous role as Evelyn Carnahan in the new Mummy movie.

I was really excited about Tomas Alfredson after seeing his earlier work – especially Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He seemed like a director with a huge future, but unfortunately, 2017’s The Snowman really threw things off track. It was almost universally panned, and sadly, seemed to halt the momentum he’d built up.

Let’s hope this new one is a return to form.
