Good news for fans of Eragon! The live-action TV series adaptation of the popular fantasy book just received a significant update.
Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing will be the showrunners for the upcoming series based on Christopher Paolini’s novel about a young farm boy who discovers a dragon egg.
Harthan’s previous work includes shows like High Potential, Crossover, and The Company You Keep. Helbing has previously been an executive producer on Superman & Lois and The Flash.
Harthan will be a co-creator of the series, working with author Paolini. Marc Webb and Rachel Moore will both be executive producers on the show.
Plans for an Eragon television series were first revealed in 2022. Before that, in 2006, the book was made into a movie that received a very mixed reaction from fans.
I know some of my fans won’t agree, but the original movie isn’t actually bad. The issue is that it doesn’t really capture the spirit of the source material, and that’s what really matters, he explained.
If I were to reimagine this story, my biggest goal would be to truly capture the characters’ feelings, the story’s emotional core, and the impressive scale of the settings. I think the original movie missed these aspects, removing things that made Eragon special. This is especially important because, being a classic hero’s journey, the story already contains many familiar tropes, and needs those unique elements to stand out.
Paolini explained that it’s important to focus on what makes a story unique. He gave the example of the mountains in his book, which are incredibly massive – around ten miles high. While it seems like a small detail, it’s actually quite significant.

There’s a sense of wonder created by the setting, even though it’s not realistic. Visually, it’s incredible to showcase and place characters in such a beautiful environment.
The movie completely cut out a lot of elements from the book, including any clear indication that elves and dwarves even existed in that world. While those characters are present, they don’t have any features that would identify them as elves or dwarves. Ultimately, I believe the film should have stayed truer to the book’s world and really leaned into those fantastical elements.
No doubt fans will be keeping a close eye on the series as more developments emerge.
