Matt Van Wagenen wants contestants to outwit, outplay and outlast for as long as possible.
Before the new season of Survivor, titled Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans, begins on February 25th, one of the show’s producers discussed what’s next for the popular reality competition.
Matt shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he’s hoping the show continues long enough for his eight-year-old daughter to participate as a challenge tester on the ‘Dream Team.’ He jokingly suggested they might make an exception to the 21-year-old age requirement, perhaps lowering it to 20 for her.
He stressed that he doesn’t want to think about Survivor ending, and doesn’t even consider it a possibility. He compared it to asking when the NFL will end – it’s become a long-lasting institution, and he doesn’t foresee it stopping anytime soon.
Matt knows the show doesn’t need an immunity idol with longtime host Jeff Probst at its helm.
You can tell how much he cares just by listening to him talk about it. We work together a lot, and I see his genuine enthusiasm. I don’t think that will fade anytime soon – he’s always discovering new things that excite him.
Season 50, featuring popular contestants from throughout the show’s history, will also include special appearances by big names like Billie Eilish, Jimmy Fallon, and MrBeast.
Jeff recently told Variety that they knew many dedicated Survivor fans are actually celebrities. They decided to include a few of them in the game, adding unique challenges to make things even more surprising and exciting!

He also addressed concerns about the bold move’s potential impact on the series.
He acknowledged it’s understandable to worry that celebrities might distract from the core of the game and change its focus. Their priority was to remain faithful to the original concept of Survivor – a continuous social experiment – and the celebrity addition was just another element to consider.
