DC Studios has announced that the new Supergirl movie will be released around the time of the 2026 Super Bowl. This release strategy will be similar to what they had planned for Superman. When DC Studios began rebuilding the DC Universe last year under James Gunn, many anticipated a new Superman trailer during the Super Bowl. However, that didn’t happen; Superman only appeared at the Puppy Bowl during that weekend.
DC Studios won’t be advertising during this year’s Super Bowl, according to Variety. Instead, they’ll be previewing their upcoming Supergirl series at the Puppy Bowl, which makes sense since both events are broadcast on networks owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. Similar to Superman, the planet Krypton will play a major role in the new Supergirl story.
Every Super Bowl Sunday, Animal Planet hosts the Puppy Bowl – a three-hour event featuring adorable, adoptable puppies playing in a tiny stadium. It’s designed to highlight the importance of animal shelters and encourage people to adopt pets.
Get ready for cuteness overload! The Puppy Bowl and a new episode of Supergirl both premiere on Sunday, February 8th. The Puppy Bowl, with over 150 adorable puppies competing on Team Ruff and Team Fluff, kicks off at 2 p.m. Eastern Time / 11 a.m. Pacific Time on Animal Planet.
Milly Alcock, who plays Supergirl, announced a fun partnership between the show and Puppy Bowl in a new video. The adorable dogs competing in Puppy Bowl are all vying for the famous Lombarky Trophy!
It’s not surprising DC Studios didn’t advertise during the Super Bowl. Warner Bros. typically avoids the event due to its enormous cost – Variety reported a 30-second ad could reach $10 million this year.
The blue brand surprisingly advertised The Flash during the 2023 Super Bowl, but the movie didn’t perform well at the box office. Despite the high-profile ad, it only earned $271 million worldwide and is considered a major flop.
It appears Super Bowl LX will lack major superhero trailers this year. Both Marvel Studios and DC Studios are expected to skip advertising during the game, which means the first trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie will likely be released at a later date.
What Will DC’s Supergirl Show at 2026’s Puppy Bowl?

Based on how DC Studios handled the Puppy Bowl last year, don’t expect a lot of new Supergirl content. They mostly showed footage that had already been released, a brief look at Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and a message from James Gunn – along with his dog Ozu – to encourage both event attendance and dog adoption.
Following the conflict between David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, which involved rescuing Krypto, Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will embark on a comparable mission in 2026. DC Studios has already revealed that Krypto will be in significant danger in the upcoming Supergirl movie, making him a central figure in another DC Universe film.
Okay, so if you’re desperate to know what happens to Krypto in the upcoming movie and can’t wait until June 26th, the comic book storyline Woman of Tomorrow already gives it away. Just be warned, it assumes the movie will follow the comic pretty closely!
As a big movie fan, I’m always curious about the Puppy Bowl’s little nods to pop culture. While anything from the Supergirl universe could pop up, I’m guessing we’ll probably see a lot of Krypto the Superdog. I’m also betting James Gunn or Milly Alcock might make another appearance to remind everyone about the importance of adopting dogs – which is awesome, by the way!
