The third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveals something that makes the ending of Game of Thrones even more disappointing when you look back on it. The final season of Game of Thrones is famously controversial, and a major point of contention is Daenerys Targaryen’s transformation into a villain. Some viewers believe her actions were foreshadowed throughout the series, but many are still upset with how her story ended.
The newest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adds to the frustration surrounding Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline. (Spoiler alert for Season 1, Episode 3, “The Squire”!) The episode reveals that “Egg” is actually Aegon V Targaryen. While he’s not the only secret Targaryen in the Game of Thrones world, his connection with Dunk and his brother, Prince Aerion, creates parallels with Daenerys. These similarities ultimately make her fate even more heartbreaking.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Reveal Sets Egg & His Brother Up to Parallel Daenerys & Viserys

Though Egg is Prince Aerion’s brother, they have very different personalities – and he’s unlike anyone else in his family we’ve seen. Unlike his brother, Egg doesn’t want to use his status to bully others or chase power, as shown by his eagerness to become Dunk’s squire. He also clearly disapproves of Aerion’s harsh treatment of people, showing much more kindness and good judgment. They haven’t had many scenes together, but their one conversation reminds us of the dynamic between Daenerys and Viserys.
Both Viserys and Prince Aerion are impulsive and act like they deserve special treatment, highlighting the Targaryen family’s tendency towards instability. Putting either of them in charge would likely be a mistake. In contrast, Egg is more level-headed, considerate, and cares about ordinary people – much like Daenerys. While Daenerys and Egg ultimately have very different goals, they share a lot in common, particularly when their stories begin.
Egg’s Story in the Dunk & Egg Novella Lays the Groundwork for Dany’s Journey

Egg’s dedication to ordinary people paves the way for Daenerys, his great-granddaughter, to champion them as well. It makes sense that Egg would begin this storyline, with Daenerys continuing his work nearly a century later, as seen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Daenerys Targaryen, especially in the first few seasons of Game of Thrones, is presented as a fair and just ruler, much like the character Egg. She fights for the liberation of people in Slaver’s Bay and claims to want to help the people of the Seven Kingdoms. Maintaining this consistently good nature in Dany would have created a stronger parallel with Egg, as both characters work to improve the reputation of House Targaryen. Please be aware that the following contains spoilers based on George R.R. Martin’s books.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Targaryen Twist Makes Dany’s Ending Worse

As hinted by the fortune teller’s prediction about Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the boy ultimately becomes a well-loved king. It would have been rewarding to see Daenerys follow a similar path. Her story initially suggests she would embrace a similar ruling philosophy, even potentially completing what he began. However, Game of Thrones takes her character in a different direction, which is especially frustrating given the clear groundwork laid for a more positive outcome. This feels like a lost chance, compounded by the fact that Daenerys’s turn feels rushed and overly dramatic.
